That's a very good question, it never occurred to me either. I've just had a brief look through my references and all show the flag being carried without the aid of a belt/bandoleer or whatever they're called.

Did the flag bearers of the era just hold the flag in their hands, or did they have some kind of sling? It never occurred to me before, so I thought I'd ask...
