One side or both?

My first search of the attic has revealed I have more longer pieces, and fewer shorter. They are all roughly 1 inch (2.5 cm) in width, and recessed to take the base of the figure.
I have:
          6 x single figure bases (2.75 inch, 7cm). These are ideal for 30mm mounted or 54 mm foot
          2 x 6 inches (15cm)
          1 x 7.5 inches (19cm)
          4 x 9 inches (23cm)
and     3 x 12 inches (30cm)
but I may well find more in time. Porthos, you have first call. Anything you don't need, it's first come, first served. The cost will be one Standard BFFS Currency Unit, which is the promise of a beer if and when we meet. I'm just glad to get rid of them.

very interesting topic    ..... I have to paint only one side as I can only display it in frames at the wall as my wife do not allow me to have some nice board as she saying we have a "modern" furniture .....    , lucky me that she did not specify the size of frames

Lol. Ray that's well said but I don't anticipate making any money off of this hobby anytime soon. Just the opposite in fact. I guess it depends on how the figures will be displayed. I think I'm going to try to do a vignette with pope Julius so I guess I'll do both sides on this set

Sorry if I sounded harsh, didn't really intend it to be, just a personal preference, I know there are many people who buy single side painted flats. Many of the Masters that I would love to have in my collection were single side painters.
Hell, you won't find much on the backside of most the art hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I can tell you from my perspective as a talentless collector only, I ONLY purchase figures painted on both sides.

I believe the bases were first produced by a company called "RA Cannons" in the late eighties or early nineties. I ordered quite a few, both in this size for single figures, and in longer sizes. If anyone needs one or two of these, including some in 10 or 15 cm (4 or 6 inches), I would be happy to pass them on, given time to excavate my attic.

I too am slow, so I think I'm going to shoot for one side as well for now. Thanks guys for the opinions. It makes me feel less guilty and will keep me sane and motivated!

I only paint one side as I display in frames and paint the figures flat on a board at 45degrees.

I'm also a slow painter and tend to get bored if I'm on the same thing for too long, well it's not actually boredom, it's just that I get interested in other figures and want to start them as well, but being a perfectionist I keep going over and over the same area until I am happy with it.

I am in your camp, I am a slow painter in any case and as such normally only paint one side.  I do have the exception if something really wows me but, given they usually are framed only one side will be viewable. 


However, I do have a pang of guilt about the matter as if I am cheating a bit...pragmatism won.

P.P.S.  With apologies to many engravers hard work matching up two sides of a figure...
P.P.S.  And I am jealous of the many folks that paint both sides with quality and also maintain a steady completion rate.

I have been pondering lately one of the great cosmic questions - one side or both? I don't have much time to paint in the evenings, but have been trying to paint both sides of figures, true to the engravings. But, I'm sorely tempted to go to just one. I would appreciate other members' two cents on this matter. Thanks!
