 When I worked Bulls Elephants as they call them in the Circus, we used what we called a Bull hook .  In my case it was a cane, with the metal end. My farther had been given the cane as a gift by the head Elephant man at MGM In those days they had there own zoo. Some are small and this is what you use to work them. Hook on the back of the front leg they will lift there leg on the top with bring down there head. Never jab or poke hard or you just might fine you self flying threw the air. The guy who operates the elephant is the Mahoot or in Burma Oozie . In India its for life.  I think you are doing a good job on your elephant At present I am working on a elephant myself hope to have it ready by May for the show at valley forge. So keep at it and its off to take care of my FLYING MONKEYS  Willie

I don't think its fully finished yet Michel.
The white 'sword' is actually a pole with a hook and spear on the end. Elephants are a rather unpredictable beast, and in some cases would go on the rampage!!  with this in mind, the Cornac would stab this into the head of the Elephant to put it 'down'!!

Gosh!!!  This is now very impressive !!
I agree that seeing the shadows on the cover head of the elephant, some deeper shadows can be given to the green folds, and on the left back side of the green sheet.
 
As the light seems to come from beforehed upper right, light on the tail, and back shield and back leg are surprising, also on the trump end, below the elephant head.
But indeed some are maintained to keep the overall figure readable (especially if the background is maintained totally black)

Also perhaps add small shadow on the upper of the the trump, right under the red cover, instead of an intense lightening ...
Last detail, the special sword used by the cornac is white, strange shape and brillant, attracting a lot of attention; perhaps some shadow can be given to reduce that attraction point excessively ... (if the light is front right, the angle of the blade of the sword should not be directed to the person vieiwng the flat, but on the left, as the sword end is hidden by the howdah ... not in its front.

As Eric said, the shading on the green could be a tad darker, bit it is a lovely piece Daniel. The Howdah especially

Let's say ... it is not bad !
I just think the cast shadows under the ear and trump could be harder
The two left legs should also be more shadowed
And last but not least you could make the cover more dynamic with some more contrasts in the folds
The better you are, the more we want !
