Great find that bread box; all the work was done for you. To add my two pence, I like the idea of some vent holes. Besides letting the heat out ( and using a smaller bulb) you need to allow the vapors to escape and not concentrate. I use a crock pot and the plastic lid's inside surface got affected from the oil paint carrier evaporating, I now leave the lid ajar (no pun intended).

Nick, just in case you're not kidding, that's a counter-top toaster oven; not a microwave. You can see the heating elements at the top and bottom.

Careful with wood and light bulbs .I used a 60 watt in a wooden bureau  top and it burnt all the wood .While wondering what to replace it with a I found a glass fronted drinks cabinet the 70's type with copper foil lining  up the tip when you could still rescue items .I fiited a light bulb and use dthat buts it overkill for flats .I used it mainly for model trains which I used to paint for customers .i now use a round biscuit tin  with no bulb but heated by a table lamp that the tins sits on .its not idealmthough .I need a smaller  type and your bread bin idea has got my brain working (again) so cheers /

you may want to try a 20watt bulb...also, most people I know line the box with aluminium foil. They do work well and flatten the paints right out,

I'm a slow painter Glen, especially in 30mm. After working on a large scale figure I find very small creases in clothing a bit of a problem.

I also keep trying different techniques to help aid me, but then because of  my age I forget which ones I've tried!!!

I now have a very nice new note book - which no doubt I will lose and won't remember where I put it!!!

Nick, downward radiating heat from the bulb is what dries the paint. If the box is getting too hot, drill a few vent holes in the top to allow rising and excess heat to escape. Start with 2-3 holes, then add more if necessary.


This will speed your painting considerably, so we expect to see an entire 30mm Battle of Waterloo by the weekend.

Jan, technically it's a box with a light in it for drying, so a light box for drying

it works well, but does get hot. I turn it on for about 4 hours at a time. drys the oils to a perfect matt too, 

I have a 40 watt nightlight, is this too much??

It also held my secret stash of chocy bars from my dearest, but I have found there may be a slight flaw within my creativity as has my wife, as she has now found my chocy in the freezer where it was trying to reform it's shape!!!!

Well Nick, what´s  the purpose with it?  Do you mean a dry box? A light box is used as a device when taken photos.

Clever, I may try this.  I have been using a crock pot but, it is showing some wear and something more gentle may do the trick.

    yes it's a wooden Bread bin!!   however there is a madness to my method.

I wanted to make a light box, so off I went to buy the wood. Being a Jack of all trades and Master of sweet F.all      how difficult could it be?

Well after looking at prices, I popped into homesense and for a princely price of £16, I got one ready made

And here it is!!!
