Post by: willie on October 17, 2013, 10:19:45 PM: Once again it is October and most of the shows are done and now we begin to look towards Christmass . Over the few months I have gotten some very interesting books. But before I start this let me take a moment to explane a few things. I enjoy buying books and writing them up for this forum. Most of them are on uniforms and a few on military History, Art, Aircraft and Ships. If I can help someone in getting the right book for his painting then I have done my job. I am not an expert but one who keeps on learning every time I pick up a new book. Second there is no such thing as the all knowing book on this subject, some are better then others. Third there are books priced for every taste. There was one member who said how luck we where to have all these book. I can remember when I first started out and it took a lot of time to get here and you can do the same thing. Also it helps when you have a loving wife who goes along with you even when she thinks all you get them for is the color pictures. So lets get started.
Historie & Collections
1.Germany in Uniform By Paul Gaujac. From Reichswehr to Wehrmacht. A paper back book with a lot of Knotel drawings in it. It covers a lot of the different organizations in the 30s. For a starter book on the subject it is nice. They Could have done a better job on the printing of uniforms in the book.
2. Officers and Soldiers of France. Paper back. So fare there have been 23 in the series the last two being Carabiniers 1679-1871 French Artillery 16871815 There are lot color plats in these books and one the thing I like is you use them for painting and if you get paint on them it does not cost you a arm and leg. Osprey look out.
Andrea Publishing
1. Deutsche Luftwaffe Hard Back. By Gustavo Cano & Santiago Guillen. These books are great books geared towards the collector with lots of pictures of uniforms and equipment, the other ones I recommend are Deutsche Soldaten Heitai Japanese Army Inside the Allgemeine SS.

Early Aegean Warrior 5000-1450 BC by Raffaele D'Amato . If anyone has a Minoan bull set you can get lots of ideas on how to paint them. Second by the same author is Bronze age Greek Warrior 1600-1100 BC I can see a nice set about Troy the color is great and lots of information. There will be third on Bronze age Carthage. Roman Centurions 753-31 BC, Roman Centurions 31BC-AD500 Now the last one An Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Uniforms of the Roman World by Kiley it has been out a year but still a good one to get lots of prints to work from Willie The above books are printed by Osprey

It is called Carthaginians 6th-2nd century BC by Andrea Salimbeti will be out in April 2014 osprey publishing. Also another title is Le Soldat Lagide de Ptolemee ler soter a Cleopantre deals with Hellenistic Egypt from casemate

1. Australian Military Uniforms 1800-1982, By Monty Wedd. It is a outstanding book lots of color prints and B& W drawings of equipment. So if you are in a rut here's your chance to bark out.
2. Dress & Insignia of the British Army in Australia & New Zealand 1770 1870 By Ronald Montague. Nice book filled with lots of information about the troops uniforms.
3. The Indian Army and the Kings Enemies 1900-1947. By Charles Chenevix Trench. A good book on the military history of the Indian Army from that period change of pace from uniform books Willie

1. The two Funkin books on the First World War. For a starter set they are good covers all the countries.
2. Osprey series. The 3 volume set on the British Army is nice but the prints are a bet washed out, but we all know that uniforms never fad in the filed :o
3. Verlag Militaria nice books covers Germany Austria. French Armies
4. Turk Askeri Kiyafetleri this book is about Turkish Army in World War I and is in Turkish. The things we do for are hobby ::)
5. Schiffer Publishing. American Expeditionary Forces in World War I , The Imperial Russian Army Uniforms.
6. An Illustrated Encyclopedia of World War I Uniforms by LB publishers.
7. La Guerra Italo,Austriaca 1915-1918 covers the Italian army and its uniforms and Equipment.
8. Almark Publishing if you can pick up these books they are great to have to paint with ;D
9. Histoire & Collections French Army 1914-1918 French Tanks brand new, and the German Army 1914-1918 not printed yet.
Now my latest addition from Military Mode Publishing is Campaign 1914 volume 1 this is going to be a outstanding book it covers the equipment of the Tommy . Lots of color pictures of the real thing. I will give a review next week when it arrives. So if you have any Christmas money left have fun. Also for those who do not like to shop there is the web lots of good stuff they too.

This time it is Campaign 1914 By Chris Pollendine This book covers the British Tommy at the start of the war up to 1915. Lots and lot of pictures of uniforms and equipment in color. Who every collections it is it's outstanding. The second will deal with British and American made service jackets and trousers. Royal Navy square Rig, Royal Flying Corps, Gas Masks and Anti Gas equipment. Metal helmets and gifts and rations. Yes even Bully Beef. The book is printed by Military Mode UK. This book is well worth the price. I brought mine at Amazon.com UK. If any of you get this book let me know let me know Willie

Post by: willie on March 01, 2014, 01:04:35 PM: OK folks here we go ;D First off I received a book that I had wanted for a very long time. Hungarian Army Uniforms 1939-1945 by Dr Tamas Baczoni. It is a paper back book in English and German. Lots of very nice color pictures in it. It is just enough information for painters like me to use. Also the price is right. This fills a hole in the World War II area. There is another book on this subject witch starts from 1926-1945 and is in Hungarian. Osprey has one witch is nice. While we are on the subject of Osprey I just got the following. Third is from Concord.

1. Hitler's Blitzkreig enemies 1940 Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium for a starter book is great.
2. 42cm Big Bertha and German Siege Artillery of World War 1
3. The Age of the Crusades. It is a nice book in that the art work is great who else but Angust McBride ;D I myself like the Mongols Russians and many more. While we are on the subject of color remember that most of the dies where natural and will range on very dark or light Willie

A book that will help you in painting Heraldry, or drive you Nuts on trying to paint them. :P The Dictionary of Heraldry By Joseph Foster. This book covers Feudal Coasts of Arms and Pedigrees. It has been out for some time and when you get one get the hard back version because the paper back one does not have the color in it. So if you paint knights let me know how you like the book Willie

This is the second in the series on the Chines Army the first being Soldiers of the White Sun. Lots of pictures of the period. A nice set of prints in the book. Its nice to get books like this ;D It brakes up the same old run of the mill books on Military History and Uniforms. Now a nice set of flats would be nice. Now for those who have a small pocket book or on a budget Osprey has 3 books on the Chines Army of this period 1900-1950 Willie

Post by: willie on April 03, 2014, 07:47:44 PM: So here we go :) Die Uniformen des osterreichischen Bundessheeres 1918-1938 By Rolf M. Urrisk. When the imperial Monarchy collapsed there was no money for a new army so they used what was at hand. This book covers the changes that took place in that 20 year period. Lots of nice color pictures in the book. There is a series of 7 books and this one is #6 covering uniforms. It is well worth the money for a book like this. As for other books not much has come out. :-\ It seems that publishers are not listening to what the public wants ??? I know they have to make money and they fall back on the good old German Army 1933-1945 :P but I am over that. So if any of you have an idea about a book let me know in the form. Willie

After almost a year some of my book have arrived ::) First we start with a small paper backs The Uniforms of the British Yeomanry Force 1794-1914 printed years ago, but with lots of information in them They are by L.Barlow and R.J.Smith . Another older book is War on The Nile by Michael Barthorp about the Sudan. Next two Osprey subjects. The first is The Carthaginians 6th-2nd Century BC. This is a great book to have for painting and lets hope that someone makes a set of these. Second Forces of The Hanseatic League 13th-15th Centuries. I am getting more and more interested in medieval armies. Third and last Histoire & Collections. I know what I stated before about the German Army and World War II :P First is German Combat equipment in the Militaria series, its a nice little paper back with lots of photos of equipment, it well not brake your pocket book. Second is Stonne 1940 in the Men and Battles series. This book gives you a over view of the battle and there are lots of good photos in it for the modeler . I am still weighting on French Artillery and Dragoons in the Officers and Men Series. So by the end of this year I just might have them. Willie

While at MFCA show this weekend I bought a very nice book, from a very nice lady who was selling her husband flats and books, he had passed away. The name of the book is Medieval Costume Armor and Weapons by Paul Hamlyn printed in 1958. It is a very outstanding book on the subject. So if anyone could tell me more about it. Let me know Willie

It was stated that it would be nice to paint them and did any one know what the drum banners looked like. Will its your lucky day. The Uniforms of the British Yeomanry Force 1794-1914 #14 Yeomanry Drum Banners and Mounted Bands has the answer. The book is by R.G.Harris. printed in 1991. Nice B/W pictures and a fold out section of the drum banners in color. I picked my book up at amazon.com. Willie

Well I just received a book today that I think is one of the best on the subject of the Apaches. It is called The People called Apache, large format book by Thomas Emails 1993. This will give you a idea on what the Apaches where and how they lived. Also the Osprey books are good to have . The Apaches and American Indians of the southwest. So this should help out in painting and engraving . Willie

I also agree on pictures of the real thing ,its a great help when you are painting. The Following publisher are out standing Verlag Militaria Histoire & Collections, Andrea Publishing, Military Mode Publishing. Now for the paper backs, Osprey, Crowood, Concord, Almark, Amber Squadron for planes and Armor. So this should keep you looking and in the used books stores a lot. Now what's new ??? The first one is called Grunt By Antonio Arques A Pictorial Report on the US Infantry's Gear and Life During the Veitnam War. 1965-1975. Once again Andrea has come out with a very out standing book. It covers everything they used in the war from Jungle boots to Playboy its in there. So if you are interested in the war this is a good book to have. Second would be Fight Gear 1942-1945 By Mathieu Bianchi Histoire & Collection it covers everything you need to fly your B17 P51 P47 and uniforms. All most forgot Uniforms of the Sea Services By Colonel Robert H Rankin USMC The book is old printed in 1962 By the Naval Institute covers Navy uniforms from 1776 to 1960 it covers a lot of periods. Now the shocker after redoing my book list I went into shock 850 books :o this does not cover the Traditions, Osprey, and I am running out room. :-[ Willie

Artillery and the Gribeauval System 1786-1815 By Ludovic Letrun Vol #1 #23 Its a nice book with lots of information and nice plates of Uniforms and equipment. The only thing I have a question on is the flags of the King, some of the color on the regimental flags looked washed out. One of the things I get mad >:( about is this company does not proof read there stuff before it goes to the printer or the printer checking on his color run >:( I just notice that they print the book in Spain. So maybe both the French and Spanish Brush up on there English and how to lay out a print set up and check the color ::) . I like these books you can use them in your book rack while painting and the cost is good. Now before anyone gets there underwear in a wedge I feel that Histoire & Collections has a responsibility to the public and its self to produce the best material they can. If I am wrong about the color I will say I am sorry. So if any of you have this book let me know. Willie

Post by: willie on August 23, 2014, 09:30:55 PM: After talking with friends on the Napoleonic Artillery flags in the Artillery and the Gribeauval System that the color was called pigeon green or orange on cantons on the flag and this was do to the way the flag was made at that time and the material they used. The book is by Histoire & Collections Officers and Soldiers of France. by Veronique & Ludovic Letrun. So fare I do not see any problems with the printing and English. The color plates are out standing and I cant weight to see the Vol #2. Now if are German & French friends produce sets of these :o We will be painting long hours into the morning. Now for are World War I Group. The Somme 1916 Crucible of a British Army By Michael Chappell. This is a old book printed in 1995 by Windrow & Greene. It is a large book and the color plates are outstanding, For are colonial subjects The Aanglo Boer Wars By Michael; Barthorp a medium size book the fourth in a series by him about the British Army. Its a nice book to read about this period, and you get a overview of this war. I like his books because I can fit them into my book cases for I am running out of room :-[ Now for the Navy types Rank and Rate Vol # 2 By E.C.Coleman brand New Covers Naval Ratings WRND Royal Marines Qarnns and Auxiliaries . Now for the US Navy group we have Uniforms of the Sea Services By Colonel Robert Rankin this is a old book but one of the best I have seen printed in 1962 So let me know what you think Willie

It is a big book and has lots of information in about tanks and vehicle types and lots of color prints in it so if you want to paint French Tanks go out and get it. Willie

This is a new book and it covers Weapons Systems, Tanks Small Arms, Warplanes Artillery, Ships, Armored Cars, and Submarines. Ok the book is By Chris Bishop printed by Amber publishing. The book is a collection of various books on this subject. For me it just what I wanted . I can use it to paint by and it fits into my collection nice .I know that there are other books out there on these subject, but this is what I need and the price is right at Amazon. Second is for all you Indian Army fans The Military in British India By T.A.Heathcote set down with a Brandy or Tea and read. Third and one of the best used books I ever got Warriors of Eurasia from the VIII Century BC to the XVII Century AD. by Mikhael V Gorelik, printed in 1995 it is paper back like a Osprey Men At Arms Series lots of color work in it. I would say that is was first printed in Russian and then English. Printed by Monvtert Publications. Last Osprey #496 The Prussian Army of The Lower Rhine 1815. so only 49 days until Christmas ;D Willie

The Definitive Illustrated History of the U.S Marines a revised and updated edition. Lots of nice color pictures in it and uniforms and weapons. Most of all of it comes from the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico VA, if you get a chances to visit it by all means do so. Second is Smithsonian World War I The Definitive Visual History by Richard Overy printed by DK. So there you go 8) Willie

The Encyclopedia of Warfare By Dennis Showalter. Nice fat book covering from 2500 BC to 2011 printed in 2013. Now for the harden military Historian this book is not what you want. I like it because when I start to look for different flats to paint I go to this book and I come up with the most interesting wars. Second The US Army Soldier By Morel printed in 2012 by Histoire & Collections. This covers the uniforms and equipment being used today in Afghanistan. Willie

I must say, you do have a wide verity of interests. I'll know who to ask if I need a certain reference.

If you have a question I will be glad to see if I have a book on it ;) I started this love with books when I was a kid and that would go along with model soldiers also. From my first book by Bob Bard to today with Histoire & Collection. I forgot to ad another one The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Weapons of World War II by Chris Bishop. The Author produces a lot of books for Amber publishing and this book is a collection of several books already printed. Like his first World War I book it dose not go into a lot of information on the weapons system, but just what I want. One of the great things about it is the price Amazon has them cheap. As I set here I had a idea come into my mind. What do you all think of starting a listing of books on various periods some of these are in print and out of print. We could also include prints and post cards. Besides it give me a chances to see what I have :o At last count I have 980 books Willie

I think that these should be a help to all of us in the society. They contain lots of information on mixing colors. The first are the Color Mixing Recipes By William F.Powell. Nice books with lots of information for over 500 color combinations. Second and one of the best books on skin colors is How to paint Skin Tones By James Horton printed in 1995 . Third is Color Mixing for Artists By John Lidzey printed in 2002 . Also Horse Color witch I have talked about before. This should keep you at your work bench Willie

Not bad for being 40 years old. Lots of B/W pictures in there and the Indian ones are great.. Makes me want to have Dubar right now :o Just think of all the Lancer regiments you could paint :P The Elephant Artillery and Indian Regiments you could have and model nice forts in the Northwest frontier. Picture 18 is interesting they are loading elephants on a train at Mooltan 1893 . So you could have the Indian Army of the Queen Empress. Just remember mad dogs and English Men Don't go out in the noon day Sun. 8) Willie

The Frontier Ablaze the Northwest Frontier Rising 1897-98 By Michael Barthorp. This book is about 19 years old but it is one of the best ones I have seen . Lots and lots of very outstanding B/W photos and the color plates are out standing. it is printed by Windrow & Greene I also have the Somme 1916 witch is another out standing book from this publisher. I was wondering if anyone of would be interested in me doing say a list of say Indian Colonial books and if this was received well I could do others different periods Willie

The book is published by Crowood Press written by Martin J. Brayley .This is the third in the series of British Military Uniforms in World War II the book covers lots and lots of uniforms and ranks. So if you are looking for inspiration on painting British sailors then get this book. The next book has been on the New York Times bestseller list. Elephant Company is a story about James Howard Williams and his units of elephants in Burma, I started to read it and can't put it down I like it 8) The third is Camouflage & Markings of Canadian Military Vehicles volume 1 &2 nice art work in both.

Wojsko Polskie 1939-1945 By Barwa i Bron printed in 1990. The book is in Polish and it covers the uniforms of the Polish Forces in the war. Some of the art work could be improved on but others are great for information on uniforms and rank. This will fit in nice with my other books in French, Finish, Russian, Italian. The first one is a gem printed in polish it covers the Huns and the Medieval periods. The Black and White drawings are outstanding of all the equipment and weapons. The title is Wyprawy Krzyzowe Armie Lodow Tureckich. By Andrzej Michalek printed in 2001. This ought to drive the painters of Knights and old guys with 30mm vision nuts when painting ;D Second is The Mongol Warlords By David Nicolle. Nice little book on the Warlords. Third is another Polish book on the polish Army from 1914-1947. Lots of prints and information on the equipment, Weapons, Ranks, Tanks, Trucks, Not to much on Artillery 37, 75, 40mm are the only guns shown. The title is Ksiega Kawalerii Polskiej By Henryk Smaczny printed in 1989 Third on the list are two books in Italian La Cavalleria Di Linea Italica 1796-1814 By Galliani printed in 1973 . Next Uniformi military italiane dellottocento dalla restaurazione allunita nazionale :P I do not know the author could not fine it, was printed in 1979 Willie 8) Now a little note to you all my wife and I are planning to move to FL so I have been packing my books away so we can show the condo . This is a reprint of the original Hard Back Book witch runs about $60.00 I first saw this book advertised on the miniatures page or the war games page. This book is geared to the war gamer but there is a lot information for the flat painter, most of the prints are copies from the Hard Back Book. It is still a good deal . The man cave took a bet of time and is a bet of a tight fit but it came out good :o My work bench had to move to the garage witch worked out well. I have a nice table witch I covered with a sheet of plexiglas :o so if I spill anything I can clean it up. I have small desk draw box where I store my tools and paint. So when I am done painting its packed away and I cover my lights and Put my work under a large glass cloche to keep the dust of it :o. For the book I do not have it, but I would like to get it. I have one on the Mexican Army called the Mexican Soldier 1837-1847 by Joseph Hefter was print in 1958 and reprinted in 2008. While I was staying at my wifes daughter house weighting to move into are condo. I received some books that I had on order.
The first one An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms of World War II. The book is designed to take a look at uniforms of the different powers. Do too space limitations ,Air forces and Navies ,Partisans, Guerrillas, where left out. Other wise I think its is a great book to use when painting. I wish these guys would come out on one about the 7 years war. Second from Andrea is US Elite Forces Uniforms, Equipment and personal Items Vietnam 1965-1975. This is a outstanding book lots of stuff in it about uniforms, some of which I had when I was over there and witch are now in the Virginia War Museum at New Port News. Third and one of the most interesting books I have read it War on the Waters by James M. McPherson . I was reading this book for a talk I was going to give at the Civil War Round Table Society of Pam Beach FL. If any of you are interested in the Civil War this is the book covers the Union and Confederate Navies 1861-1865. Also I checked it out from the Libray :o :o Willie

yes you are right.
Gyozo Somogyi is a well decorated Hungarian graphic artist and painter and really he made a series of richly and vividly illustrated booklets that cover the main periods of the Hungarian warfare (dresses) up to 1848.

They are English.
The prices vary about 8-10 Euro each.
According to my judgement they are useful for those who are interested in these topics.

This covers the Hungarian Soldiers in the World Wars 1914-1918,1939-1945 . It covers a lot of information and lots and lots of color plates. Not only uniforms but the Navy, Trains , Planes, River Guard, Red Regiments from the 20's World War II is covered very well. The next ones are going to be The Army of Transylvania 1559-1690 :o wonder if that comes with fangs or look into my eyes ??? . The Hungarian Military 1768-1848, Royal Hungarian Defense Force 1868-1914. Hungarian Flags. So we have a wide range of stuff for the painter. Most of these are paper back if you want a hard back, Then try the hardback book by Verlag Militaria and have deep pockets :o Willie

I thought I was buying one from Amazon and when it came it was small and the prints where Black and White :( I was lucky :o many years earlier I had been able to get the post cards of Lovett's Uniforms from the National Army Museum and need a couple more to round out the series. At present I do not know if the still have them for sale at the Museum.

I recommend the following books. Campaign 1914 Volume 1 and Campaign 1915 Volume 2 By Chris Pollendine. Military Mode Publishing 8) Uniforms & Equipment of the British Servicemen. :o This is going to be a outstanding series. Lots of color pictures of real equipment and uniforms. Another one to be TBA will be WW1 British Battle insignia :o They also have a series on the Imperial German Army. Now if this does not fit into your budget :-\ I recommend Osprey easy to use when painting and they cover a wide range of Armies of that war. Historie & Collections covers the French army 1914-1918 the Officers and Soldiers series. Also these books are great and offer the painter lots of information. 8) In my next installment I will brake down the countries. Willie

When I first saw this book I thought it might be interesting since I have the series on The British Army, The French Army Russian Army Turkish Army, The American Army and soon the Belgium . The section on uniforms could have used a bet more pictures of original uniforms in the museum at Belgrade Military Museum and the Serbian History Museum. Also more on the ranks insignia . You know the had thing about looking at new books on uniforms is you don't have large book shops like in London Where you can go and look at the thing first hand. Or there web page where they give you a peak into there books and you can judge for your self. Willie

Justinian's Wars Belisarius Narses and The Reconquest of the West. The book was printed in 1993 by Montvert Publishing. I have several of this series and they are based on Osprey type books good to use when painting flats. Second is a Russian book Kiev Ruse AE Russia IX to XII. It covers the history after the acceptance of Christianity. The color work in it is great but a bet light other wise its a great book for knights and armor. So you have Turkmen Mongol Batiya, the civil wars in Sweden Germany to the time of prince Alexander Nevskiy . You will need someone to translate it for you. Willie

These series of books are out standing and well worth the price. My favorite was the Zulu Wars though all of them have been exceptionally well written. This one manages to tell the entire story of the campaign in this one volume with the major focus centered around Rorke's Drift.

I saw and ignored these for years until the Crimea Lancers cousin Charles put out sparked my interest. Thoroughly impressed on the quality I hunted them down one by one paying far more than if I purchased over time as they were discovered.

Any way one of many guilty pleasures and another wound to my wallet cousin Charles has to answer for...

I have my year end books list, This year was not really a large amount of books on Uniforms :-\ Histoire & Collections did not come out with any in there Officers and Soldiers series. They had one on Women In Uniform but if its like the two volumes on American Uniforms in the Vietnam War forget it. Second Andrea Publishing. Grunt, US Elite Force and Hookup US Paratroops in Vietnam and the Cold War. All three of these books have loads and loads of pictures of equipment. ??? Now for those who have deep pockets there is The Belgain Army in The Great War, and Imperial German Artillery 1871-1914 By Verlag Militaria very nice books but very expensive and heavy :o The Hungarian Army Series from Hungary is a great deal I now have all 10 of them 8) Osprey had some great titles this year the Warrior series and Men at Arms. 8) Military Mode Publishing weighting for there Campaign 1916 to come out and they said they where going to do, one on the patches of the British Soldier in World War I. Now for the Armor fans Camouflage and Markings Allied Armor in the Battle for Cassino Jan-May 1944, Camouflage and Markings Commonwealth & Greek Armor in The Balkans Campaign April-May 1941 . This year also marks a milestone for me :o After years of buying books I have come to a halt. I no longer have the room :P I have a collection that if there's a question I can fine the answer. ::) I am now at the point where I can pick and choose ::) . Also I have been buying CDs on uniforms and I like them and they don't take up room. So if you have any ideas about CDs or books let me know. Willie

I just received a new book from Amazon. The Dress of the Royal Artillery by D Alastair Campbell printed in 1971 By Arms and Armor Press. It covers from around 1642- 1960s The size is nice not big and not small in the middle. Osprey has a couple of new Men at Arms series out. I was able to go to the National Capital Model Soldier show and picked up this book Die Formations-und Uniformierungs- Geschichte des preubischen Heers 1808-1914. By Von Paul Pietsch Volume 2 printed in 1966. In the 60s this was state of the art on German Uniforms some color plates but most are B/W drawings with nice detail . I want to get volume 1 on the infantry. Willie. The book is in German but with a Webster's German English Dictionary no problem . Willie

Yes the ox train arrived :o after a year. I like what I see in the sample pages lots of pictures of how the insignia is placed on the uniform. Second is Horse Archers weapons Vol 1 & 2 By Gyozo Somogyi. :o I have the whole series and I like them very much 8) They are in English and Hungarian . Third is The War Of the Triple Alliance by Gabrielle Esposito printed by Winged Hussar At first I was a bit apprehensive about this publisher because of other books they printed and did not get great reviews :o So I got on the phone talked to the owner and he stated they had worked out the problems. I think this well be a great book to have about a little known subject. This author has done Several Ospreys this year and I recommend these also 1.Armies of The Italian Wars of Unification 1848-1870 Vol 1 8) 2. Armies of the First Carlist War due on 12-19-17 3. This book well be out next year Armies of Early Colonial North America 1607-1713. As for Osprey well there are a lot of titles in the Men at Arms Series to chose from . I like these little books for painting :o I know there are a lot of more books out there that go into more detail and I have them but if you get paint on them no major lose and they are getting better in there art work and material. An for the guys with deep pockets there are always Verlag Militaria German Artillery 1870-1914 Belgium Uniforms of WW 1 and the latest German Pioneers 1870-1914. Willie ::)

So lets start with what it covers Scythian-Saka People 4th-1th century BC. Parthian People 1st BC-3rd AD . Sasanian Persian Empire 3rd-7th centuries. The Hun Empire in the 5th century. The Avars in the 6th-9th. centuries. Sogdia & Khorezm 7th-8th centuries. The Turk & Uigurian people in the 8th century. Tibet in the 8th century. Chines in the service of Tibet. Last is the Kyrgyz just one print but I think it well more in Vol 2 . If you are looking for something else to paint you have a open section to choose from ::) I wish that they made some sets of these people ;D So now off to order Vol 2 :o I think that there are two more books on medieval Knights in Hungry :o Willie

This book covers a lot of information on the German Army's Last Cavalryman 1920-45 . I know that my farther would have liked this books since he was in the First Cavalry Division 7th Cav in World War II . His division was mounted until they went over seas to Australia. They also patrolled the border :o I like it because of all the horse equipment in great detail, and the formation information in it. It is printed by Tiger III Books ??? Its not cheap but if you are interested in Cavalry its worth it 8) Willie

The following countries are covered Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay. Along with the Osprey Men at Arms Series on this period of history you can paint a lot of interesting figures. :o Willie

Mamluk 14th century Persian 16th century, India 16th century, Mogul 16th century, Nogat &Crimean Tatar 14th-17th century Turkish 16th century, Sipahi 16th century, Hugarian 16th century, Polish 17th , Russian 16th century, Japanese 17th century, Manchurian 18th century, you could say the late 17th century also. This was printed in 1991 the Blandford series I like book and he is a great author on the subject and this series runs from Uniforms to Aircraft. In this day and age they just fit right in both for space and budget. Second is Ceremonial Uniforms of the World by Jack Cassin-Scott & John Fabb by Arco publishing ??? printed in 1977 . I like it its a nice little book with lots of ideas for painting flats :o you could paint Life Guards ,Palaces Guards and so on ??? Second Osprey is coming out with some neat Man at Arms Series one is on the Dutch Army in the East Indies. Willie

The Fighting Ships in the Royal Navy 897-1984 by E.H.H Archibald printed in 1987 . There are a lots of books that are printed on the Royal Navy but this is outstanding in regards to the different ships in the History of the Navy. It is a Blandford series composing to volumes wood and Iron. I know a lot os you guy and gals are not into Naval but this book covers a lot of information color and black and white views of ships along with flags and ammunition :o It has a lot of ideas you could use to make Diorama with flats. So take a look and let me know what you think

This series was based on a Osprey's men at arms .This book is packed with lots of information and color plates for you painters. One of his books he wrote was Spearhead of Logistics The History of the US Army Transportation Corps and he gave staff talks at Yorktown Battle filed . There where Officers from all over the World. We where talking about what does the painter of figures want. That's a good question :o what do you want. Books on Uniforms in the last 50 years have doubled in content . We both said that when we where young if it had color picture of a Uniforms we bought it :o . Now these days you can go on the internet and fine about any thing. Yet a lot more painters us books. Today most are Paper Backs vise Hardback. I use Osprey because if I do get paint on them I am not out $100 or more :-\ and they don't take up space :-\ Now for the painter historian I would say Helion & Company and don't leave out books not in English .and the Hard Bound Classics . We both agreed on what I said. I am not a expert if I was life would be a bit dull :'( I well still open a book when I need information. What makes this guy so interesting is his Helmet I have never seen this kind :o They state that it was found in West Sussex and on page 45 they have a reconstruction of it in the Novium Museum Chichester I think it would make a neat figurer Willie

So I went to the Casemate page and found this information Between 1940-1945 The Diamond T Motor Car Company supplied just over 50.000 Vehicles to the US Military and also the Allies Off this just over 30,000 were heavy 4 ton 6x6 of various types They also made the famous halftrack 10,000 produced

I have the MacMunn book with the Lovett illustrations this is a great book with some beautiful illustrations also the Boris Mollo and one or two others. An interesting time in British history with some colourful uniforms.

I have to say I'm using books less and less. The internet is a quick and free way to do research. The argument for hard copy books is diminishing from year to year. Don't misunderstand - I love a good book and holding it in my hands. But the world seems to be moving in a different direction.

I adore books and have a room in my house that is a library with floor to ceiling book cases. Separate from that I have a hobby room with its collection of books as well - including hundred's of Osprey's, Windsock magazine, as well a complete collection of Historical Miniature etc, etc. Fortunately I used to tear apart magazines and file articles by subject or I would have had several thousand other magazines. (That collection which once resided in a 36 inch four drawer file cabinet has since been disposed off.) I love them all but, use most of them hardly at all with the internet slowly taking precedence. (Osprey I now buy digitally as most of them I purchase because they are interesting but, have no reason to keep a publication on Victorian Gunboats for example - I will never model from it.)

Beyond a shame but, tastes change. (It also one of the reasons I enjoy the BFFS Journal so much as it covers a fair amount of ground on the history of our craft not to mention requiring no shelf space!

Good luck let me know if you crack it?

Only two collections of books are paper when I bought them young, but indeed, electeronic access and storage are much better.

But another question to all of you,: When had you the time to read all the books you have in your houses !!!! in your busy life, and if not read, why to you bought them all? Decoration?

(I've the same quesion on myself, why did I bought a grey army of 10,000 flats if not for painting them ? (but on my age !!!)

Post by: marko on October 27, 2022, 05:35:36 PM: Good question Hannibal and the answer from all collectors is we all intend to paint them, read them etc. , i.e. we started out with good intentions...despite require a 300 year life span to complete.

For my library I have a pretty good track record in that 70 - 80% have been read - and it is a large library. Fortunately I can read quickly but, am finding I have little patience these days with poorly written books. (I just finished reading NAM Rodgers first two volumes on the British Navy for the second time with the third supposedly due any day now. What a wonderful writer...)

With flats I am doing pretty good and a finish a fair number but, far more to paint than painted. (I used to do aircraft and still do the occasional WWI but, donated most of them due to the paltry completion rate. Similar case with rounds. However, all were purchased with good intentions.) My issues with all of them is I have tendency to start a lot of things based on mood but, then finish far less.

I have become much more choosy and careful in recent times but, there are still so many shiny objects. With books if I am going to read it once and then get rid of it I tend not to purchase and with flats I have a set of rules now which have slowed the pace. (I also have talked myself out of some WWI 1/32 bomber kits based on massive wingspans - what does one do with a model 2 feet wide?)

Perhaps this site needs some type of a support group similar to Alcoholics Anonymous?

Marco - I too used to tear out articles from magazines and file them. Great minds!!! ;D Just got rid of them about 5 years ago when it became space for books vs articles.

Willie - lugging all these books to shows is probably not an option - its all I can do to get myself to a show, let alone a bunch of books. :-[
Michel - don't you know? You cant die until you paint all your grey army! :) You're going to be around for a long time, Amigo. Maybe "purgatory" is remaining alive (ghost?) until all the figures are painted - which makes it "work" not "fun". OTOH, maybe that's heaven! We'll see.

I went today (and tomorrow), to my first show post Covid, in a small town of 10,000 inhab. in the North of France, close to Belgian border, called "Vieux Condé. It is the 17-th show of figurines, flats and models, in a large sport room.
It was so warm and pleasant to see many unkown friends sharing the same passion together, a smile on their face ...

Let's hope we an attend many more and for a long time, with the positive feelings detected, although, unhappily so many works are dealing with tanks, warships, soldiers and death on the tables ... How can we love war so much to be so tightened up to it!0 And it is not for a célébration or reminding, too many weapons are still used daily in our countries so-coalled 'in peace', that it is insane !

We should destroy them all instead of venerating them... Is human being really fitted for peace? Shall we never become wise and mature enough to get rid of all of this one day? .Apparently no! (and it generates so much money and profit for some).

As for Uniforms Osprey Men at Arms has German and French Armies Next would be the two printed by Helion & Company Saarbruck to Sedan the Imperial Phase of the war ,The Republic Fights Back the Republic Phase of the War. These are two new books with lots of Information on both Armies .
