Title: Something new has been added - FlatWiki is here!
Post by: marko on May 12, 2013, 06:53:04 PM
A few weeks on of our members, Steven Lloyd - closerlookbooks - approached me about collaborating with him on a WIKI site devoted to flat figures.

A wiki is a website which allows its users to add, modify, or delete its content via a web browser usually using a simplified markup language or a rich-text editor. Wikis are powered by wiki software. Most are created collaboratively.

What
makes a wiki special is it allows someone to experience it in a non-linear fashion, i.e. unlike reading a book a user can move through content based on where the mood takes them rather than just going from beginning to end.  It also allows a little more room for putting together content a bit more lengthy than the forum allows.

Steve has approached a number of figures in the Flat Figure world for adding content, at the moment there is some basic starter content there to give a feel for what is possible.

To participate and please do, you will need to register for a new user account - apologies but, usernames from this site will not work there as well.  You can however read articles without registering.  (Also if you author content you have the option of locking if for editing as well.)

Please let Steve and I know what you think.

After reflecting on the world of flat tin figures and the various categories of interest (editors, engravers, manufacturers , painters, technique, and the like) it seemed to me that something like a depository of articles that brought it all together was in order. I also knew that the developer of the software that organizes Wikipedia made the software available for free. When I found out about Mark's talent with software and that he maintained the IFFS forum, I threw the idea out to him. I felt guilty because I knew the bulk of the construction of such an Internet encyclopedia would fall on him. He liked the idea and ran with it. He has worked on this project for a number of weeks. I only hope others with knowledge of this wonderful art form will be enthused about it and motivated to write and to contribute to it. Just imagine the potential! And thank Mark for all the time and effort he put into this project. Thanks Mark.
Cheers,
Steve
