MFCA Show Highlights
As always, the MFCA show offers a truly stunning assembly of flats, rounds, toy soldiers and even canvas art for the show-goes to enjoy. This year was no different. One exciting thing for me was meeting two gentlemen from Scotland, one of whom is a member of the Society. Thanks for making the trip, guys!
Some random highlights: Bill Merklein, noted sculptor, has been trying his hand at sculpting flats. His painting style is somewhat impressionistic, and the figures look quite good and more to the artsy side.
There was some excellent canvas art, including my favorite by Walt Damon, still life with bullets. Penny Meyer’s Napoleon and Buttercup (Cow) was executed on a rough surface that reminded one of the walls of an old house.
Catherine Cesario Poisson was not present this year, but her husband Richard brought her latest work: Nymphea, which was nothing short of spectacular in both execution and subtlety. Charles Gravallese got the best flat award for his Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Penny Meyer’s “Byzantine” is a flat mounted on a piece of translucent mineral rock. Penny says it combines her two interests: painting and minerals. The effect is stunning. Penny also did a demonstration on painting using the grisaille technique (black and white under painting with oil colors on top. The gallery shows two examples of how a grisaille looks about half done.
Walt Damon gets my “Thinking Outside the Box” award for his humpty dumpty, which started life as a lapel pin which was painted then mounted in relief on an oil painted background. His Jefferson is a composition of some wood he found in a carpenter’s scrap pile, a bias relief figure of Jefferson, and some very expert background painting of the Virginia state house through the window of a room. Note also Jefferson’s quilted vest. Some great painting and thinking went on here.
Just some of the flats-related highlights from the show.
Please visit my gallery in the Gallery section of this site for pictures of these pieces.

Nicely done PJ - looks like a great show with a pretty fair showing form a flat standpoint. Thank you for sharing.
One thing I find interesting in these is there does appear to be differences from a national perspective how flats are presented and displayed. Figures from shows in France are a little different from Germany and the UK and the US. Stylistically there appears to be some differences in preference as well which makes for something for every taste.
Anyway some great work here and some clever presentation.

Just a correction, the griffin rider attributed to Dave Oswald 2 was actually mine and took a bronze medal.
-
Indeed the style in the USA is a bit different than in Europe....
My favourite is the soldier of Pete Culos 3 ... outstanding shadows and highlights, colour mixes, the painting is really coming out of the frame !!! at least a half-round flat figure however!
An idea to keep is the crystal as background for flat busts ... Congratulation!
Also magnificient Astérix and Obélix painting from J. Russel ...

Thnk you Pat
I do like Pete Culos figures
The "grisaille" category is unusual and quite interesting

Sorry about that, Larry. Pix were taken before the show opened on Sat - and before breakfast. I'm NOT a morning person.
That also explains the out of focus ones - that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :)
I also realized that I left out Greg DiFranco's work.!! Will correct that tonight when I'm home.

Greg DiFranco's flats have been added.

Aahh, nice paintings from Di Franco ... especially the lightening!

A great show to visit lots of super figures in competitions and many interesting people to meet it was good to finally put faces to names and meet with friends from previous shows. Everyone made us feel very welcome. I can highly recommend a visit to the show.

Hi Kevin,
I bought the figures on e-bay some time ago and unfortunately don't know who the editor is. The base doesn't have any identifying marks.
