A bit quiet of late so why not shake things with another Campaign Proposal?
For those who don't recall last year saw a very successful Campaign using one of Neckel's figures from the Army of the Blue King - http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?topic=1062.msg7950#msg7950 (http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?topic=1062.msg7950#msg7950)
http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?action=gallery;cat=28 (http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?action=gallery;cat=28)
The figures
I have had these Schlotz figures for quite some time in my backlog - a good phalanx worth. As Gianpaolo Bistulfi has shown me a number of times - almost all flat figures look better painted. In this case he has some lovely hoplites on his site showing what can be achieved:

In our case we will be painting one of these worthy fellows:
[attach=2]
The Rules
The rules are quite simple really.
1.) You tell me you wish to participate and send me your address through a Private Message
2.) I send you a figure
3.) You paint it
4.) This one is the important part - display it here on the site - you can add the figure to your collection
So who would like to take the challenge and embark on another campaign? Just send me a message with your address and I will get the chaps in the mail to you.

I'm in! PM sent.

Let's go Marko
I am in
Eric
I think you already have my address
-
Truly excellent - any other takers? Remember there is a phalanx worth.

-
Lots of flesh, metal and intricate shield designs. What could be easier? Yes, Mark, I will have a Hoplite please.
Charles
-
Goodness the Greeks are on the move!
mark 8)
-
I will give it a shot. PM sent.
-
welcome aboard Robert, nice to have you here ;)
I've still got the blue king figure to do ;D, but Christmas is on it's way and I have a good couple of weeks off. If you want to waste a figure on me Mark, I'll give it a go ;D ;D ;D
-
That's what I like enthusiasm...
I confess to having the Blue King figure as well as the club Thirty Years figures to finish myself so don't feel too put out.
I have been on a painting binge of late and ordered some of the oils you recommended so have high hopes to finish everything myself. (Last weekend it was ancient Libyans, a couple of Napoleonic, some 17th century and a Geisha so I do not lack for variety.)
Metals I still struggle with so these should be an interesting challenge for me as well. I have two lovely knights Charles sent me that I keep whacking away at with little success so we will see if I have better luck with depicting bronze over steel.

Hello Mark, I sent you a pm to join from Belgium!
Michel
-
If you still got one or two left I'll join in ;) ;D
-
Excellent - figures will ship next week. I will have plenty to go around.
mark 8)
-
I'm still on for a pair of hoplites (and the other two). I'll do an SBS for at least one of them. Using acrylics, I tend to paint 30mm quickly.
Looking forward to the project.
Glen
-
Hey Mark, if you have plenty, send me one of each three instead of one single? it will be nicer to paint on the row!
Michel
-
Probably not an issue. I am planning on sending everyone 2 figures currently so 1 more to you should be doable.
mark 8)
-
Super, alone is a bit sad to keep; I woud heve to look for a Persian figure to balance him!
-
Hello Marko, have you sent something?
-
Not as of yet - a bit busy at work and with the season.
Will try to get them out this weekend.
mark 8)
-
Standing by...
Are they here yet?
-
shipped out?
-
Should be over the weekend. I just need to get overseas paperwork from the post office.
mark 8)
-
Super .. Thanks Mark! ;)
Sorry, I bought painted Carthaginois footmen on EBay , took off the paint from one in order to test some undercoating technique, but the metal workmanship was catastrophic, so just for trial, not quality.
But I plan to paint a greek or roman soldier soon... then an Assyrian
-
As these have not yet been mailed, this is a good time for me to remove myself from the project.
I appreciate the opportunity, but I don't believe I have the necessary time to complete the painting of these pieces.
-
As you wish Robert, though there is no rush nor expectation on the painting aspect - just display it on the site when you get to it.
Let me know if you have a change of heart.
mark 8)
-
Hoplites are begging to ship and I find I have 6 takers:
Glen/Brian/Nick/Eric/Charles and Michel. Robert has pulled a hammy and has dropped by the wayside temporarily.
Anyone else interested in joining?
mark 8)
-
I'm still in. For two (different) if you can spare them!
Glen
-
Apparently they have had enough drinking and womanizing. The Hoplites are in the mail - everyone has three to take a whack at.
Glen I added two of the Peter Uwe 30 mm figures as well to give you an eyesight challenge!
Michel/Glen/Eric/Charles/Nick/Brian/Kevin enjoy and post them on the site whenever they are done.
mark 8)
-
Yupeee, will work on them as soon as received, in line with other projects ...?.
-
Good to hear! I'll keep an eye for them.
Any chance of an Amazon spanking machine? :o
-
Mark, the figures arrived today in good order. Will start cleaning and priming. Am I painting one side or both sides? Are there painted versions of the Uwe pieces? I'm not sure what I'm looking at in terms of clothing - fur maybe?
Cheers,
Glen
-
You can paint one or both sides of the Hoplites as you wish. Just please post pictures! Again the figures are yours to do with as you wish - I just hope you enjoy the challenge.
There are a number of great sites with shield designs by the way. Here are some memorable ones:
Hoplite Shields (http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/s-73-greek-shields.aspx)
As far as Peter Uwe if you look at his site in the links he has a few pictures of painted figures. The figures themselves could probably benefit for a vinegar bath and some scrubbing with steel wool. Look under Sonderfiguren and he has painted examples.
You may also enjoy something I have just added to the upper menu under SBS as you are well represented:

Got mine...nice pieces...now for the eternal struggle with bronze.
-
I will paint on one side ... to expose in a frame, not on a table... best selecting best representative side (shield or other ...)
Therefore if more than one, painting one on each side is ideal! Thanks Mark if we get three !! a dream...
-
OK, good to know. I'll opt for two with painted shields and one for the back side. Researching now, but NFL this afternoon/evening.
Glen
-
Got the figures yesterday
Thank you Mark
The tw minute men are nice too and will be painted with pleasure
Eric
-
Excellent - as always I look forward to your fabulous work.
I started my Hoplites last weekend and hopefully will get some time tomorrow.
mark 8)
P.S. Any thoughts on who edits the minutemen? I have a number of them and they are nice clean castings, very well designed. I can't recall seeing any painted which is a bit of a surprise given how nice they are.
-
Hi Mark
The minute men are from Wolfgang Hafer
Eric
-
Hello,
The figures arrived today!!!
Ans there are .... five ...
Three Scholtz hoplites 1431, 1432 n 1433,
(http://i38.servimg.com/u/f38/17/41/09/92/hoplit11.jpg)
and two other figures from WH (Wolfgang Hafer ??
But would you tell me who they are ? They look like figures from the American Revolution?, but I have absolutely no lnowledge of that period, nor of the armies in conflict; Your help would be useful on the edscription.
Seemingly one officer US 10
(http://i38.servimg.com/u/f38/17/41/09/92/office10.jpg) (http://i38.servimg.com/u/f38/17/41/09/92/office10.jpg)
and one foot soldier US 11.
(http://i38.servimg.com/u/f38/17/41/09/92/soldat10.jpg) (http://i38.servimg.com/u/f38/17/41/09/92/soldat10.jpg)
So I can look at uniformology and documentation (I have only the first booklet of Hafer figurines, old times).
-
Minute men of the american war of independance issued by Wolfgang Hafer
They were civilan voluteers so no uniform
Eric
-
I have some documentation on the Minutemen which I will dig up and post. I just thought they were great castings.
Eric, thank you for identifying them. I would not have guessed Hafer.

Mark, my Greeks have arrived, thank you. I will get cracking mid-Feb when I get back from holiday.
I have quite a few of the Hafer War of Independence figures, if you fancy some Hessian jaegers to go up against your Minutemen just say the word.

I have two of the three Hoplites cleaned up and primed. I'm planning on painting one so I can show a 30mm flat raw, one cleaned up and primed, and one painted for my upcoming painting class(es). Still trying to figure out what I'm looking at in regards to the two little warrior babes. Found drawings, but no painted examples. I may have to -gulp- wing it... :o
Hannibal - I'm looking forward to your Hoplite WIP!
Glen
-
Hello Mark,
I don't forget alo t paint your two nice characters on US Independence War, they are primed, jus insert them in the painting Schedule...
Michel
-
Excellent, I look forward to seeing the fellows. :D
mark 8)
-
OK, first one done! The other two will be part of a flat painting class. One raw, one cleaned up and primed, and this one. After the class, I'll start the other two in a different color scheme. The pic is about twice actual size.
Cheers,
Glen
-
Keep on sharing Glen !
Thak you
Eric
-
Nicely done !!!
-
Thank you both. I won't get to the next one until June/July. I do think I'm going to take a closer look at the remaining two under magnification and try to sharpen the detail a bit before I put brush to metal. Can't resist... making... modifications...

Hello Maek !
After several weeks on working for Montrouge, next week for the Paint Demonim in Lille , I found back the two characters of the Independence war you sent me with the hoplites and tonight I fixed their identifiaction = two members of the Loyal Queen's County Militia from 1780-1781 !!
I am collecting littérature and colour plan and will publish a work-in-process descripton.
Michel
-
Very cool, I am looking forward to seeing them.
I have quite a bit of AWI information, I will see if I have anything on who you are mentioning. There are also a couple of nice sites in the Miscellaneous links section of the site http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?action=links;cat=4 (http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?action=links;cat=4) which may provide some help as well.
-cheers

I have the same source and book! Thanks Mark ..! the plate No 184
-
Back to the Hoplites, here are my three.
-
Score three for Charles - a nice workman like bunch of fellows, well done. These look great.
(By the way I put down a basic coat on the knights you sent me this weekend so I am getting there. Still having trouble depicting armor though my horses are improving.)
mark 8)
-
Good luck with the knights. I have left them alone, and have embarked on a Burgundian wedding set.
-
smartly done Charles, very nice
-
Cheers Nick. They won't win any prizes, but it was a subject I never tried before. Thanks to Mark for making me get the brushes out again.
