Title: Army of the Blue King - Campaign Proposal
Post by: marko on December 21, 2013, 11:44:52 AM
The site has been somewhat awash in lovely Neckel figures of the Army of the Blue King of late - which are a personal favorite as well.  I noticed and have won an auction on Ebay with a number of Neckel's Hartischer Life Garde 1717 figure.

[attach=2]

As such I am proposing a mini-campaign and am looking for 8 painting companions for this figure.  Just send me your address through a Message on the forum via the "My Messages" link on the top menu of the screen and I will send you a figure to paint.  Your only task will be to commit to share it here on the site.

I will shortly have 8 figures and will need 8 fellow painters to join.

Here is a lovely example of the figure by Louis Liljedahl:

Who else is joining us?

Well Mark, i would like to have a go too, please.
Anything you would like in return? I have more figures than I can count. How about a nice Frank engraved Burgundian knight to test your armour painting skills. I am just starting some myself.

Mine arrived yesterday afternoon. :)

Bit of confusion as when I got home the dear wife said " you've received a model from Mark Kirkbride, it's up stairs on your table".
when I stared at her blankly, she said "did you hear me?" I then said " why would our Neighbours son give me a model ?  :o  does he know I paint ?

Then she said, this one's come from America, unless he's not really there but next door!! :o :o :o

ARE YOU NEXT DOOR  Mark, you sneaky bast**d!!    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

It's a small world :)

Martin there is painting at the beginning of this thread showing the original painting this figure was created from.

However, it being from the War of the Spanish Succession the figure will work for another of other nations.  I have another nice alternative I will post tonight.

As Mr. Bistulfi so brilliantly showed in Journal # 82 the era of the War of the Spanish Succession is rich in colorful uniforms which a with a little modification of existing figures are available.  Here are two alternatives for this figure:

and

Both of these are from The Armies and Uniforms of Marlbough's Wars by CS Grant which are handy little books.

Hi all
Here are my first steps
Let's say first that the figure is marvellously engraved ( Frank)
It deserves a very carefull cleaning and a very light undercoat
The face is very thin (don't forget the little mustach)
[attach=1]
The coat is not easy with stripes of very near colors : silver, blue, black
As usual I started by blocking the colors
I used cobalt blue, highlighted white and shadowed ultramarine
Silver is payne grey and white
Black is black
The pictures show different steps and whre I am tonight
[attach=2]
[attach=3]
[attach=4]
I still have to work a little tonight to smooth the paint
Tomorrow I will deepen shadows
Eric

Coming along quite nicely.  Your style on this figure reminds me a bit of a Eugene Leliepvre which is perfect.

I have not had time to get to mine - buried in a commission of Buck Rogers figures - but, will be paying close attention to your approach.

New steps
The basic color of the horse comes with white, ultramarine and black

The next pictures show the different steps with addition of yellow ochre, lights and shadows
Several details have also been added

This is very good. Just the right amount of detail on a 30mm figure.
Particularly like the horse and the riders coat.
You should have a look at other figures in the set from Neckel. They are very impressive most engraved by Frank.
Keep the little blokes coming

Mike, Eric, thanks a lot.
I have looked at a lot of painters, and both of you in particular. Very different styles and much to be learnt from both. I am painting more and finding my way, really enjoying trying different colour mixes, different textures etc. I am pleased with this figure, although I look and see plenty of areas to improve. But you have to stop somewhere and move on to another figure.
I think I will always prefer the 30mm figures although the current trend seems to be moving away from these. Like you say Mike, let's keep the little ones out there.

I'm confused... Is the 2014 project the Blue King Army or the outbreak of WW I? I've followed the thread on the former, but I can't find a thread on the latter. I'm more than willing to participate, as I did with the ACW project, if someone can send the relevant figures.

Cheers,

This is a kind of private venture by Mark. He had a number of these figures and sent them out to those interested. The only deal was that you had to paint it and show it on the site.
The WW1 Project is for all members of the Society, but you provide your own figure and send it in to be included in a display which can be taken to shows etc. You can find that thread in the Members Only Forum under BFFS Projects.

BFFS 2014 Project Thread is here:

http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?topic=845.0 (http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?topic=845.0)

It is appropriately commemerating 100 year anniversary of WWI.  You do however, need to supply your own figure for the effort, though I am sure if someone asks other members would be willing to share a figure for you to paint.

My campaign as Charles notes was just a private venture based on the fact I had multiple figures to share.  It has been an extremely successful venture given the results so far.

Neckel figure is based on Anton Hoffman’s Life Garde 1717 figure:

Does anyone know if the lace colour was silver or white  for a trooper .My gut feeling says silver as later ceremonial units had silver though this doesnt follow the usual silver  for officers and white for other ranks etc.
thanks in advance

Hi Martin,
I have illustrations showing silver or white and what looks like gold colour. So take your gut feeling. I painted mine gold because it was what I prefered.

I researched this as much as I can, because I'm VERY picky about getting stuff right, sadly!
 I found conflicting illustrations, but from other precedent it's likely white to retain the distinctive between the officers.
For the record, I just did mine how I liked :)

This has exposed an interesting issue to this time period - Neckel has an extraordinary line of figures for the Army of the Blue King.  A number of them are direct copies of drawings by Anton Hoffman such as this one.  However, the reproduction of these drawings and the uniforms is a bit variable depending on the source.

The photo I used is from the Anne S. K. Brown library.  The most common reference out there is from Nafziger which has different coloring on a number of the figures than the print at Anne S. K. Brown.  There are a number on the internet which also show some slight variations.

Unfortunately there does not appear to be a huge amount of other information available.  Best advice seems to be that taken - do what feels right and looks good...

Thanks Eric, I was thinking that myself, they are a bit fuzzy. I'll replace them later today when I have a few minutes to spare.

I've removed the previous photo's and put some better ones on, any fuzziness now is down to my painting.  ;)

They are beautiful figures are they not?  And the results have been quite stunning!

And actually I have one more figure everyone has been painting if anyone wishes to join late, and I have a few multiples I would be happy to send out as well.  I will post a pic sometime soon and soon who wants to extend the campaign into Officers and Staff...

You're right Mark they are beautiful and I enjoyed painting it. I actually found it more difficult than I anticipated but I got there in the end.

Joking aside I would be interested in any multiples you might want to part with and I'm sure we could come to an arrangement either swaps or payment.
