Thanks for all the advice guys its much appreciated, I have plenty of acrylics, but no oils so I'll go and buy a small tube of black oil paint.

Give it a dark or black (very liquid) oil paint,
let it dry
and go over it with steel-wool pad (for cleaning pans and working tables)
to bring out the bare metal as highlights.

Clean the figure of flash, black oil paint dabbed on and in one direction gently clean the paint off, this give you a patina on the figure

Thanks Guys I appreciate your input!
What I would actually like to do is just bring out the detail. Would putting on a dark wash and then rubbing it off be a solution?

One very old and simple approach is to undercoat in a dark color and then use rub'n buff which is a paste that can be applied with a cloth. There is a silver, silver and bronze product all of which provide a nice aged look.

Are you looking at darkening or rusting them? Possibly a dark oil paint wash filling in the cracks and crevices followed by a lighter drybrushing working from the top and going downward? Perhaps an illustration/image of what you're looking for would be helpful?

Edit: I probably should have read Midge's first post. In my defense, I've only had one cup of coffee (so far) this morning...

Hi
I am a total newbie to flats so could you guys advise me on what medium & method I would need to use to to age or antique flats rather than painting them in the traditional way. I hope to use this method on a couple of pieces to give as gifts.
Thank You for any advice.
Cheers
