Title: British cavalry during the Victorian Era - long project
Post by: fesak_j on February 24, 2021, 07:59:39 AM
Hi lads, I have started my second long term project British cavalry during the Victorian Era. The number of figures - unlimited for at the moment as I'm still in middle of research however since my daughter is falling asleep earlier, finally I found a time to paint.

My first is Suffolk Yeomanry cavalry - ca. 1860 - it is a lightly edited Schmidt figure.
In the middle of painting I'm stuck. Please, does anyone know if cavalry wear sabretache - ca. around 1860(pic the bottom left corner)? The paint is from the other side (what I have realized later when I started) and I can not find any valid info. I would rather prefer to hear that not - instead of editing half of the painted figure.

Thank you, stay safe. Jozef

There was a series of small booklets on the yeomanry cavalry by L.Barlow and R.J.Smith with illustrations by Bob Marrion. I have No 2 the North Somerset Yeomanry. The illustrations show them with the sabretache worn by officers throughout the Victorian period. Not by other ranks, though. The booklets were: Sussex Yeomanry, North Somerset Yeomanry, Yorkshire Hussars, Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry, 3rd count of London Sharpshooters, Duk of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry, Yorkshire Dragoons, Lovat Scouts and Scottish Horse, Warwickshire and Worcestershire yeomanry.

Jerry: thank you for the reply, that is what I was looking for. As the figure I m painting is the officer, I will try to edit it somehow by adding the sabretache without any damage to the paint  :-X ::)  ........anyway I googled booklets - 15 pcs for 5pounds, that worhts I just wrote to the seller (one more thanks for a good tip).

Christian: thank you  :)

There is quite a lot of info in the series of Tradition magazines published by Tradition of London many years ago, but it would take a bit of time searching through them to find the sort of information you want. These were very good quality magazines, I have the full set. Will have a bit of a search if I get the time.

That is interesting.....I have a few magazines & books and following great website uniformology however sometimes it just let my imagination working.

e.g.:  By 1850 the trousers may have become green in line with the officers. It is very likely that the other troops of Suffolk Yeomanry had also worn green coats but with scarlet facings, however there is no direct information on this.

I painted trousers blue - as it looks like blue from the paint.

I will come more with other figures  ;D ;D ;D this is just a warm up.

Gottstein edited - ca. 1912 City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) ...... that was one hard figure to be painted.  Took me with several breaks around 3 weeks.

Love the rendition of the blue uniform especially.  I think blue colors are difficult to pull off in 30mm.

Thank you lads for the kind words  :) :) :)

John: I thnik the deep/ dark blue is the most diffucult colour to paint. It can t be lighted up with the white colour as you will get light blue effect which is not correct, or in front of my eyes it does not look well - just to paint the pants it took me 2 hours (I had to repaint it 5x, as I did not like the final look).

Curious if you are stripping paint job and starting over or repainting over previous work to achieve better result.
Title: Re: British cavalry during the Victorian Era - long project
Post by: fesak_j on April 21, 2021, 12:19:19 PM
I m painting over the previous work or improving painted parts by adding more colours, lights or shadows. No stripping. Several years ago i have damaged the figure while i tried to strip it off, so i decided to not strip the paint again.  :)

Even more impressive, to avoid the buildup of too much paint.  Thank you for explaining.

They seem indeed to be beautifully painted, but the pictures are so dark that they are barely visible, to be fully appreciated

Perhaps a poor adjustment of my screen, altough other pictures are looking normal .

Michel, your help (I really appreciate it) forced me to think to start do better photos. I have draw ( ;D ;D ;D ;D ) how I do photos: I m standing under main light in the kitchen and I m creating the shadow by myself to avoid shine effect. Photos are taken by mobile phone, I do not own any camera. Why I m doing that? Somehow upon the principle of the photo tent. It might be wrong however I did not develope yet how to do it better  ???  and I tried a lot. If you do not mind, could you be so kind as to advice me?  :) :)
