Title: Waterloo
Post by: Brian on December 17, 2014, 05:39:39 AM
Next year as you know is 2 hundred years since the battle, June 18th 1815 was the time and Belgium the country.
Napoleon nearly had it sown up but our mates the Prussians saved the day for the old Duke.

So is there a figure your going to paint to show at your club and shows?  if your undecided might I suggest "Friends 1815" there you go! you  know I was out to sell you something  :D ;)

The figure is of British and Prussian line infantry men after the battle and is the BFFS 25th anniversary figure that was commissioned by the members of the society, 54mm, one side. If there's one figure your going to paint and show how about this one? lets try and get the figure at all the shows and club meets

There's going to be loads of French figures out there how about trying to balance things up!! ;) we did win after all  :o ;D ;D ;)

No Glen not a project figure, just think that the old Brits and Prussians get left behind in the figure stakes. The French uniform is not that great!! when you take out the Hussars which are Hungarian the guard lancers  are Polish or Dutch so what you left with blue and white !!!

The Brits are much more stylish with red, blue and green, no need for the fancy gold's on their general's :D

The French uniforms are the best. Long live Napoleon. We would all be in blue with golden eagles if Napoleon was not let down by Ney and others at Waterloo. The Prussians in their boring Black would not have saved the day.The only reason they British wore red was to hide the blood to stope the rest of the army from running away.So for Waterloo 200 we should be painting the very colorful French uniforms. Not the boring red. Vivi Napoleon. You only have to look at Wellington's unifoum against Napoleon. Boring  ;)

You only have to look at Picton he did not know how to dress.  Top hat and tails in boring black. No since of dress. Napoleon staff were all well dressed and smart.

But Chris their not French uniforms :o their everybody else's, the French have blue that is so dark it could be called black

But anyway this just point out what I was saying, we're going to be flooded with French army figures and if you want a figure that stands out I would go for the British and it's allies,  and that where "Friends 1815" comes in again ;) be different don't be part of the pack that dose another French figure.

How about other British figures[attach=1]

Hi everybody,
the flag engraved is 1804 model. Is it a mistake or creators have information on some regiments that had early flag models during 1815 campaign?

A complicated piece to be sure; lots of overlapping shadows. If I may ask, where is the intended light direction coming from?

Then please look in Ospreys for 1815 flag models as well as British Waterloo uniform, the overalls were grey. Brian Fosten made very useful and detailed drawings for these books. It will be a pity to see your great painting job not historically correct.

yes, I have painted the overalls grey, but I prefer to keep more contrast so I added as 2nd light pure white. At the moment the contrast is maybe not very clear regarding shine of oils oposite the light.

ill repaint the flag in the end, I see the difference in patern.

Very impressive
I just think it lacks shadows on the ground under the men

thanks eric, i have added more shadows under the men....and finished last details.
Title: Re: Waterloo
Post by: errant49 on March 02, 2015, 03:00:35 AM
I think it is better but not enough
For instance you should darken the ground under the french
Also look at the  legs of the english pushing on the left
If the light comes from the right there should be some rather neat shadows under each leg
Just try it when your paint is well dry; if you are not satisfied you just brush it off

thank you brian  ;)

eric, nicholas: thank you for advice, I will wait a while till the ground will be more dry and I will add more shadows directly under the men and lightly more around.
Title: Re: Waterloo
Post by: Glen on March 02, 2015, 12:03:00 PM
It's coming along nicely, but I would agree with Eric; more shading is needed especially on the wall and gates behind the soldiers. The representation of the brick and wood is excellent, but there are different angles to all of them. Shouldn't the highlighting and shading be a bit different as well?

Press on!

Nicely done but lacking some contrast
You should accentuate the shadows
But probably the picture does not help the appreciation
Eric
Title: Re: Waterloo
Post by: Glen on April 03, 2015, 11:38:32 AM
Nicely done, but I agree with Eric in that the shadows need more contrast. Part of that is because it's difficult to discern the specific light direction. For the most part it seems to be washing down from above and front but certain areas that should be in shadow are not (the upper under the hat brims and the area under the left figure arm for example). Other parts - cannonball, left figure leg wrap, and right figure shako - indicate above left front; while the drumhead and bare knee seem to indicate above right front. Still trying to get this right myself, so I tend to look for it...

Cheers,

Glen

thanks for tips, lads  :)

i was wondering how deep shadows/ better to say the contrast/ should be?

this is my first two projects ever with flatd, i tried 4 round figures before just to touch oils & acrylic paints  :)  ....in the next project i will be more softer with highlights & shadows.....
