Eric
-
Hello,
One could think that the darkness of the picture posted was intented to hide the small uncompleted détails of the painting, so I tried to bring up some rebalancing of the lights, and the picture reveals a very beautiful work !!
Congratulations, outstanding painting very well balanced in tones & shadows !!
All shadows are given, even on the floor .....
the only detail due to sculpture, but which could be perhaps painted in "trompe-l'oeil" is the flatness of the bak leg muscles, rather flat, even with a strange shape recessed in the main thigh instead of a positive roundness .. and sharp roundness of its back keeping the structure of a flat, but this is used and emphasized by some other painters too as a style.
-
michel: thank you so much ;) ...... nothing to hide here, just i m deadly weak to do photos ::) i use mobile phone and the shadow is me during the late night in the kitchen ;D
good point. firts i have painted the trousers close to final version but it looked too flat. i did not like and i repainted it to previous published version and as i wrote, i was not satisfied again. i did all day thinkin in the work :D how to paint the roundness in 2 or 3 mm ? ;D i think you re right that at least i could add a little dark grey on the back side of the leg :-X which def help to create an ilusion of 3d. :)
-
i need to share what i have done when i did not give attention of engraved details at the banner......what a nice monkey and white t-rex.... not sure if some lifeguards units use/ used it ;D ;D :o ......now i hope i could clean it by a scalpel and paint it again by freehand
-
Ha that's fantastic! You should leave it and see who notices.
-
lifeguard drummer done :)
mike: i could not leave it like that ;D
-
A very nice painting. Respect!
-

-
merci beaucoup Michel ;) no stress
-
Very nice painting. I like that.
As your painting is dark (as my own) I would try to take pictures against a lighter background. Maybe something in the colour of sand, like a parade ground would work to give the figures a greater effect.
Christoph
-
You are right, Christoph.
Black background brings up the best colours, due to the contrast between no colour and colours.
White background is probably the worst becasue white is tt bright and kills the colours, which become too dark! the white therefore become too shiny to the eyes.
But other backgrounds lighter can be useful if associated as complementar to the dominant colour of the painting. The tone is softer, Grey is neutral, more 'universal', but others would also fit.
Here are some examples or a red painted subject.

-
christoph: thank you for a tip ;) that s correct, i use dark tones and highlights a bit more than before as i was inspired by you ;D
michel: thank you so much, this explanation is perfect. i was thinking how it could look with different colour backrounds :) ...... i think that the black backround is the best to use or dark blue maybe dark grey.
-
finaly the first done after a few weeks of doing nothing and playing with mine 1/72
-
Looking good again ;)
-
thank you Brian ;) more come soon
-
Again very nice.
I´m not sure, but is this the blacksmith of the unit?
Christoph
-
Hello Christoph
It is the Farrier of the unit and is responsible for the care of the horses, main duty in war is to lop off the hoof from dead or destroyed horses which has the regimental number to proove that the horse has been lost and not stolen or sold by the rider.
The Pointed part of the axe at the rear is designed to despatch the horse and the blade to remove the hoof.
The Farrier carried out some of the duties of a blacksmith but I believe is not actually a blacksmith.
A look through a good book of blacksmiths. Farriers will explain better than I can.
Kindest regards
Bob
-
Thanks for the exlanation Bob.
The farrier is what I mean with the word blacksmith, but it wasn`t the right translation into English.
Christoph
-
thank you christoph and bob ;)
-
Hello lads, just a progress as I have framed some of the figures already ..... :)
-
Looks great! But how many are you doing? That's a huge frame?!
-
hi mike, thanks :) i ve done 21 already from 58 ....the size of the frame is 25 x 90 cm
-
prince from kent :)
-
life guards officer + farrier
-
Blues&Royals officer + B&R guard
-
....3 to go and at least the suite is done :)
-
hi lads, for a first time i had a bit modified the figure :) from scottish piper to irish one ;D i hope in near future i could improve it as i need one more and i have one more scottish extra
-
I would't be able to distinguish the différence !!!!
-
.....between doing nothing and work finally another 2 done :)
-
Really nice,
especially the Irish piper. Hoping for more.
Christoph
-
Congratulation !! You master also the tartan better than myself!
-
;) thank you lads, for sure more will come still ca. 23 to go ;D
-
Beautiful work.
Show you have courage at conversions of figures. So be still appear some more unikate safe. keep it up.
-
thank you wolfgang, i appreciate that :)
-
Have to agree, nice painting in a style all off your own ;)
-
Just one small point (I´m a piper myself so I noticed that):
You paint the drones of the pipe of the scottish piper all brown. Drones are mounted at the end of each section with ivory or metall (silver or nickel). Take a look here:
http://www.piping.on.ca/browseproducts.asp?catID=155
Christoph
-
No a bad remark ! even at that scale ... sharp eyes !!
-
:o :o :o what a faux pas ;D ..... thanks a lot, I almost missed the detail ;)
-
hi lads 8) another 2 done
-
Fesak I really like this series 8) Since they have done the Guards units, It is time to do a RAF and Gurkhas group they also guard the Queen :o Willie

Now if you where a full member I would have you doing a article for our Journal ;) really like the way you have painted these.
-
Thank you Brian, I feel honored. ;) Really can not reject this offer to write the article, so be sure that I ll become the member soon. I think in following months I could be almost done, still 20 to go.
-
A big welcome as a full member Jozef ;) now lets start on that article ;D
-
brian: thank you one more time ....
.... and another 2 done ;)
-
officer done :)
-
Beautifully done. Really like your technique. Very precise.
-
thank you mike ;) .....
.... and one more
-
welsh guards officer
-
;) ;) :D
-
Nice
-
finally the music band is completed + major general :)
-
This set is really wonderful and the article in the Journal very interesting
Thank you for that
I wonder if a dark background is the best for your figures
Maybe could you try a light blue or light grey
Eric
-
thank you Eric ;) guess the white is too screaming on the black backround instead of other calmed colours, otherway i did photo by mobile and the natural shadow is me under the light....i think in some photo tent it should be provided better. i ll try different backrounds with the next figure :) and post the result.
-
I did lighten the pictures before sending the Journal to the printers, but should have lightened them a bit more. It is a bit subjective - what looks OK on screen may be too dark after conversion to CMYK and export to print quality PDF. Will try harder next time.
-
jerry: i think you did a great job 8) ;) thank you
-
Thanks for the article, Jozef, always grateful for articles for the Journal.
-
one fresh from the desk... guardist done
-
Nice work 8) So you have all the Guards regiments and the House Hold Cavalry done. I think that I told you :P That you needed a set of Gurkhas they also guard the Queen , When I was in London 30 years ago with my then 2 year old daughte :o I remember the RAF guarding her and the RAF band marching out when they changed the guard. 8) Willie
-
willie: i hear you ;) i m editing 2 figures to 1 raf and 1 ghurka 8)

Eric
-
Still looking good ;D
-
eric: during the weekend I ll try to make somehow photo tent as the frame is large and as I usually did photo by mobile phone this time is almost impossible, what a luck that I have some basic photo camera ;D so i have completed: music band, the queen and her suite, soldiers ...
brian: ;D ;D ;D ..... it is very hard to keep the form as Eric has constantly.
-
I ve tried the pink holiday camera and here is the result ...... not sure if able to get better, hope to attend local conetest 17th of March to meet some profi guys :) till that date I need to finish the last 5 riders
