The birds can be done the same way. Technically, anything can be done this way. All you need is photo at the pose/angle you want (or something close). Just use an imaging program to re-scale the photo to the size/scale you want, then trace it out. You can also blend two or more photos. If you have some drawing ability, you can also change some aspects of the image as you draw it. I use these techniques in own scratch-built flats. I imagine others do - to one degree or another - as well. If you have any questions just ask. I check in at least once a day.

Cheers,

Glen

I have no idea if someone has made flat butterflies, mainly because this is waaaay outside my area of interest.

However...

If I recall, the traditional method for displaying butterflies was to spread the wings out and put a pin through the body. This pose could be reproduced easily by drawing out the shape (Google/Bing Images are your friends) on thin (about .020") sheet plastic*, cutting it out with sharp scissors (straight and curved), and using putty to build up the body. Lightly engrave the wing markings and body details, prime, and start painting. You can do the same thing with any pose simply by copying the appropriate pic. Like the pose, but not species? Just make the appropriate shape and markings changes on the basic drawing. Use thin wire for legs and antennae.

There, I've planted the seed... ;D

At the bottom of the gallery section you will see a large jumble of words, this is a tag cloud.  All of the gallery pictures have been described this way,  So if you wish to see Detlef Bellashk pictures click on that name and you will see all of those pictures,  Click on Napoleonic wars and you will see just those pictures,

You can also search in the gallery by these trrms as well.  with 2000 pictures just a convenience for finding things.

Detlef Bellashk http://www.flachfigur.de does have a few parrots in his line as I recall.  If you check his name in the tag cloud I think there are some examples there.

This is close:

but, probably not entirely what you have in mind?

I can remember, parrots, water buffalo, lions, horses and lions but, no butterflies.  However, I bet there are some out there...

Good luck.

Haven't run across any, but wondering if there might be large scale butterflies available from any editors? I'd love to paint/frame some... seems there must be some, somewhere?
