Title: Mignot Painting Project 2015
Post by: Michael_43 on March 30, 2015, 11:19:41 AM
Hallo friends of flats,

I asked in Kulmbach/Plassenburg for flats for a Mignot-Painting-Project 2015.

We get a limited casting for a project :D :D :D

What figures we get will be a surprise.

To save postage we´ll distribute the flats on the BFFS stand at the "Zinnfigurenbörse 2015"; the rest I´ll send with post.

The figures will be presented in a frame for the BFFS stand like 2013.

Who wants to take part of the Mignot-Painting-Project-2015 ???

Best regards

Michael

To decide whether I wou;d participate or not, I am not sure to grasp the timing & workload of this project= how many flats ae involved by each for painting; when available and by when to be completed, because I am leaving mid-May to Turkey until early August to visit Kulmbach, then back to Turkey till December.  I can't get them end of May till Early August if availabe by then...
Thanks

Hallo friends of Mignot flats,

I´ll get the figures on Saturday 8.8.2015 in the morning. So we´ll meet at the BFFS stand at 13.00 o´clock on Saturday.

Everybody is welcome members and associates; I only see 3 associates on the list and I think it´s not a problem for this project.

Every member and associate get´s only one figure and he has to send them back for the display.

I think it tooks one year until all figures are back.

Best regards

Michael

Hello friends of flats,

today the frame and the passpartout for the painting project arrived.
It´s a black MDF-frame 40 x 30 x 4 cm and a white passpartout with a cutting 19,5 x 29,5 x 1,3 mm. There are 28 mm
between background and glass, so the foot board of the figures must not be damaged.
On the background I´ll double up a second black 5 mm background with velcrol/loop tape. So it´s easy to remove the second
background with the figures I´ll mount.

On the passpartout I´ll print the lettering "British Flat Figure Society" and the BFFS sign on the left and the right.
Below I´ll print the lettering "www.intflatfigures.org". I´ll use the font and color of our homepage.

On the black 5 mm background I´ll write on the top "BFFS Painting Project 2015" and below "Mignot figures produced by
Plassenburg/Kulmbach" in grey letters.

Under the mounted figures I´ll write your real name and your country. If you´ll want´s to be anonymous, I could use your
nickname you use in the forum. Please let me know.
If you´ll get the figures posted in August please let me know your adress with your real name.

I´ll show the frame in Kulmbach on the BFFS-stand where you can get your figure on Saturday 13 o´clock.

Any additional ideas are welcome.

Best regards

Michael

Hello friends of flats,

I used the bad weather today and finished the passpartout for the Mignot painting project 2015.

Additional every painter will get a small air cushion envelope with an adress lable to send them back.

If you want to be anonymous you can get your figure in Kulmbach and send them back without sender.

See you at Saturday 8.8.2015 at 13 o´clock on the BFFS-stand at Kulmbach.

Hello friends of flats,

first I must say thank you for the big and friendly help to distribute the well casted Mignot figures from the
orginal moulds (no silicon) for our painting project yesterday in the heat of Kulmbach.
I think the figures from the portrait series are suitable for beginners and experienced painters.
With the envelopes everybody had the same chance to get a figure.
There are color pictures in the Vullinghs/Krannich Mignot book and in the internet like on the side of
Alexander Baden.
The AFCFEF edits a 54 mm Foch and there is is a picture of a painted Foch figure on their homepage.
Look at the pictures of Fourquet.
There are only a few figures left we must send per post; Nick in the United Kingdom.
When you start painting, make some SBS-pictures.
I think it´s interesting to look at the different ways every painter uses. We never stop learning.

Best regards

Michael

Aille ... my historical period of interest ends at the first empire ...., even just prior to the French Revolution due to difficult battles on uniformology with Napoléon .... but it is a nice challenge!!!
I take it !!
As I escape to Turkey early september, I'll finish it for December or January .... (planning is full).

Michael, let me dream on the remaining pièces still without owner till now!

Hello friends of flats,

the era after Napoleon I. is interesting, too. You have an ´evolution of adornments´ at the officier uniforms.

It starts with unadorned uniforms in the French revolution and ends in more ornamentation than blue uniforms
in the end of this development.

4 envelopes are left in my box. If I´ve forgot somebody  or if somebody want´s to paint one who have no
figure, please contact me.  Marko, Snagy, Erich and Glen figures will be posted today.
Brian, Roger and Charles figures are distributed by Nick when he´s back from Kulmbach.

Best regards

Hello friends of Mignot-flats,

I hope somebody starts soon with a SBS for beginners and people who wants to learn something.
Don´t start at 15.8.2016.

It´s only necessary to paint one side of the Mignot flats because they´ll be presented in a frame
like the last projects.

The other Mignot figures the Plassenburg casted for "200 years Waterloo" was sold out at Saturday in Kulmbach.
They are still very popular.

Hello,

I will open a subject in the Workbench section of the Members, to detail my Step-by-Step painting of Charles X.
Indeed, I will need some time of preparation, because I found the oïl painting from which the drawing and engraving was extracted, but I will have to make some conversions on the face, the bicorne, the horse and the bust of Charles.  In short some 11 small adaptations before I would start the painting.
I am not used at that scale, and I hope I will not scratch the flat totally, otherwise I might have to ask for another copy !!!  For example the face engraving is quiet poor and different from the real face of Charles X!.
Here is an example of the face of Charles.

Hello Michel,

It´ll be interesting. I´ve never made conversions on a face of a 30 mm flat. I only use my oil colors to optimize
faces of 30 mm flats.
It´s a historic flat, engraved in the 30´s and the casting in Kulmbach was strong limited.

Best regards

Michael

I'm thinking it miight be easier to remove the engraved facial detail, re-establish the corrected facial features and perspective with finely scratched lines, then paint it as you would paint a small face on canvas or art paper.

Just a thought...
Title: Re: Mignot Painting Project 2015
Post by: snagy on August 30, 2015, 11:04:04 PM
Yes, it is quite interesting trial.
Looking forward to see the progress.
Other way I am on the view of Glen: since it seems (comparing the face of the tin figure with the painting) that major modification should be carried out, the total rebuild would be more promising than modification of the present facial lines.
I think a Dremmel (Proxxon) powertool with fine chiseling head would be a help.
Good luck!

Good idea too Eric !
It will also help others who picked the same flat...

To Glen = yes I did erase the engraving on the face and partly on the bicorne, and added some putty to make it flat for painting the face as a canevas or miniature. But I had also to add some left material to create a noose and chin.
More on the new subject later. I built some historical information about this unknown king in my culture..

My Richelieu on horse piece is cleaned up and primed. Now, a question... Did Richelieu have a 'uniform'? Outside of his church vestments, I mean. In one painting he's wearing armor and the red cloak and cap. I was going to paint the armor, but looking at Michel's piece it seems he's not wearing it. Is the blue costume standard or did he wear a variety of other colors? My interweb research has not been helpful...

Hello Glen,

I think he wears an armor like on the "La Rochelle" picture, because he was very unpopular in France and
involved in the 30-years-war, the war against the Huguenots, etc. So I would wear an armor this time, too.
There are not many uniforms in the 30-years-war.

Private he wears the habit of a catholic cardinal without armor. As cardinal he had to hold a lot of wor ships
and audiences.

So I think his catholic habit was his "uniform".

Well, I'm familiar with Richelieu wearing armor and the red cloak and cap, but my piece is definitely not wearing armor. It's just like JohnR's piece below and enlarged by Hannibal. I think I'll have to paint him in some sort of civilian costume - perhaps a purple hue? I'm going to try and paint the horse a dapple gray just to make him a bit different.

I'm thinking a group of scantily-clad and thinly veiled dancing girls might have been more my speed... ;)

Here's mine cleaned up and primed. I was really pleased to receive Sobieski, a personality I am already pretty familiar with.

However disaster struck when I was cleaning it up. I managed to break his crucifix. I've managed to effect a repair with epoxy though but I daren't try and remove anymore of the excess glue in case I break it again. With some paint on it and because it will be mounted on a background it might not be too noticeable..... hopefully.  :-\

Hello Sandor,

if you´ve finished your Mignot-figure wait 2-3 weeks to dry the colors. First only the surface is dry.

I think it´ll be an interesting display. We´ve rare Mignot-figures from the antiquity (Caesar) until WWI (Foch).
The history of each historic figure is interesting, too. For example Vercingetorix was the living model for
the comic-figure Asterix.

And all figures will be painted by the best painters of Europe and the USA ...

Hello Glen,

when I look at your gallery I think you paint on a very high level.

You think a lot about light and shadows.

Today the first two envelopes comes back; the black background arrived last week.

Perhaps take a new one and ajust lightening before posting

Michael, I have an idea... :o  I'd like to do a minor conversion on Richie to depict armor like that in the painting of him standing on the docks. Some scraping and minor puttywork is all that's needed; then paint. I just want to do something that's a little different from all of the others. Is that ok?

Hello Glen,

it´s ok to convert the Richelieu to a figure with armor. I think it´ll look good and it´s not a big conversation.

Several years ago I saw a nice harem of Fritz Menz. As basic figures he used the WIMOR-Harem 1001 night
and additional his saracens around as guard.

For the walls he used small carpets from an old carpet book.

Best regards

I've seen that set Michael. Or more accurately, a catalog .pdf of drawings. If I can't see the actual metal, I pass. Berliner Zinnfiguren also has a 1001 Nights Bath set - mostly nudes, but some background scenery. They show it painted, but no images of the bare metal. Again, I pass... Drawings and painted figures are not a selling point with me. Drawings indicate intent, but not necessarily what was actually engraved in terms of detail, perspective, etc. Likewise, a skilled painter can hide a multitude of sins with oil paint. This might be a bit harsh, I know, but my hobby budget is limited.

@Michel: I can't see your Charles X. Since this is a group-wide project, you may want to post it where everyone can see it.

Glen,
Thanks for your comment, and I am asking to Mark where to place.
The BFFS project and the Workbench sections are located elsewhere, where I tought and placed it would be most appropriate, as it is a Work-in-Process posting.
But I can also post it as it is completed here, when ready... I am a slow painter .... and I have some visit, so matter of one or two weeks more..
Mark, can you advise and if better, move it accordingly?

Along with the Journal one of the pluses of membership, a Step by Step workbench section!

You can also purchase 1001 arabian nights from Holland Merten in the links section.  Their figures are displayed unpainted.

Post by: Glen on September 23, 2015, 01:24:28 PM
Yo Mark, I did see the 1001 Nights pic. It's small, dark, and muddy. There's just no enough there for me to consider purchasing. It also seems to be sold only as a set. I'd rather cherry-pick 6-7 pieces or so and go from there. As I am not a collector, everything I buy, I buy with the intent to actually paint. But whatever I buy has to be good - accurate in both dimension and perspective as well as detail. A drawing or painted figure gives me no real indication of what the metal is really like. Neither does poor photography. So, I wait...

Roger, your piece looks great ...and my apologies for jacking your thread.

Cheers,

Glen

Of course black looks as an evidence, but too evident
A cherry bay with deep brown shadows and yellow to white highlights, black hair light blue highlights would be quite harmonious with the cardinal clothes

Hello Nick,

I think piebold horses were very common in the 17.th century.

Look at the orginal paintings of the 30-years-war or the horses of Louis IVX.

Later horses with one color were more popular.

Well, I thought everyone would be doing variations of a brown horse, so I was going to go with a dappled gray, so it would stand out from a black background, but not get lost against a lighter background if that's what was going to be used. It's good to see some color variations.

Nick your piece looks great!

Roland, I figured as much. The gradations in tone are great; very smooth.

Nick, oddly enough I was looking at the same crest for the pistol holder. That idea warranted a rethink when I saw the complexity. I didn't think of culling it down to just the three chevrons - well done. I do want to do something with it, tho'. Anything to break the expanse of gray horse and red cloak. Maybe a NASCAR sticker...  8)

I've been given Foch. It's not my period, and as everyone knows, history ended in 1821 with the death of Napoleon. I have no problem with Foch's uniform, but cannot find details of the horse furniture. What colour leather for the straps, what metal for stirrups and spurs, buckles and breast ornament. What about the schabraque and holster covers? Any help would be most welcome.

Still pluggin away on my Richelieu. I've carved away some bits in the center and then added the arm, torso, and thigh arm. Nothing fancy; just the outer shape followed by engraved armor segments. Repositioning the cloak edge is next. I'll post a pic when the putty work is done. If nothing else, it reminds me of my efforts to scratch a 30mm pinup girl - way too little for my fat hammy fingers...

Well here it is! I removed the cloak over his arm and redrapped it over his back and rejoined with the existing engraving. This allowed the addition of the upper arm armor segments, a small section of the cuirass, and the suspended plate over the thigh. It took about 15 minutes of sculpting in two sessions - armor first, then the cloak. Next a bit more cleanup, then re-priming.

But first ...the NFL and the MLB Rangers!

Aves Apoxie Sculpt. It's a two-part putty like Kneadatite/Green Stuff and the Milliputs. I use shaped toothpicks, a few rubber clay shapers, and a hobby knife bladed to work the putty with a final smoothing with a small wet paintbrush.Standard stuff, really. Working time is about an hour; full cure in four hours, but can be force cured with heat. It can be feathered, cut, and sanded to a smooth surface after curing. There are other colors - I prefer the medium gray, but this last batch I got was all the shop had and it's mixed to a white. I have no idea if it's available in Europe or the UK.

I've made some progress! The armor has a base coat, but I'm not happy with it; the metal pigments in the paint seem too large for the scale. The skin tones are done, as are the hair, beard, and cap. The cloak is about 75% done, while the dapple gray horse is about 90+% done. To be continued...

I've given up to use metal powder in metal for 30mm fats . Better to use NMM, not so hard to use...
Title: Re: Mignot Painting Project 2015
Post by: Glen on October 21, 2015, 04:07:01 PM
Well the odd part is I use metallic paints for 30mm rounds and there doesn't seem to be an issue. Old paint maybe... I have used NMM techniques on some pieces, but normally I like to polish the metal parts and then stain them with oils. Since Richie's armor was putty, that wasn't an option. Will rethink.  ???

Your Richelieu looks great. The horse - yes, a little bit like marble.  ;)
Needs a few shadows and it will work......

I use Paynes´s Grey and Indigo for the shadow of a white horse and it´ll run...

The camera makes it look more blotchy than it really is so it should be OK :-[

A few colours to add in before the freckles  ;D

Bit more on Trigger the horse!!

have added, French yellow ochre, paynes grey, violet and white , but the ochre doesn't show up too well!!

Don't be afraid of the shadows, they give roundness and life

I do like Richelieu's face
I think horse's shadows could be deepened; to warm it you could add a little burnt sienna
The cast shadow under the rein is false; it should go down at the end

To have the shadow you made the sun should come from down

Would you believe the section under his rear leg is neigh on black!! :o  You can just see a bit more ochre though. Shadow under rein has been adjusted ;)
Title: Re: Mignot Painting Project 2015

Hello, Nick;;
For me still insufficienttly shadowed ..
I think the reason is that you still consider the legs of the horse and his back as "flat" and not "round".

When you bring shadow on a round tube or a ball, at least 1/3 of the surface in the shadow should be dark, when yours are only at the edge !!!   Take a small figure of a horse, put Under the light in a dark room, an take a picture of the shadow, you will see !!
I tried very quickly to adjust on computer the effect as illustration...  and darker ...  There should be also no pure white on the surface opposed to the light source !! but darkness (conter light very slight at edge from environment reflections, but "less dark", not pure white !!

Dear, dear ... I think you are a little too harsh Hannibal, in your judgment of Nick´s horse. To me it´s looking rather nice. Perhaps a little more shadowing here and there. White horses are rather hard to paint, better to go for a gray with dapples.

Just a thought, the reins are usely resting close to the horse´s neck, without casting a shadow, not until the neck, in the front, gets norrow and the reins are hanging lose you will have a casted shadow.

Well, nobody said it should be easy to paint 30mm figures in an artistic way!

All comments are gratefully received :)  Thank You 8)

This is basically the base coat ;) as the horse will shortly be turned into a Piebald. ( see earlier comments ) ;D ;D ;D

Yes indeed Jan, I agree with you, the reins wouldn't have a shadow until they drop off the top half of the neck, but personally I think that the effect, although wrong, does bring out the 3D effect better for a 30mm flat figure. As you say-- Artistic licence :)  That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Rein shadow is good now ! and I am Ok with the "artistic licence" concept
Anyway all that is a question of feeling and looking to much for perfection will harm spontaneity which is important in flats painting

...and speaking of dapples, Jan. Here's Richie all done ...unless one or more you see a big boo-boo. Despite toning it down, there is still a bit of a glare on the armor; perhaps the scanner light is too intense. I also stole a page from Nick's book. Rather than try to duplicate Richie's full coat of arms, I just went with the three red chevrons. It was that or a NASCAR sticker. Or the MG logo.

Questions and comments are welcomed.

This goes to my club meeting next weekend, then I'll send it back to Michael. Still thinking about the MG logo...  8)

Almost complete now - horse has changed colors twice as has his cape but, happier now.  Just needs some touch ups and finish the cuirass and then back to it's home.  Despite all a sweet figure!

(I also knocked the horses tale off so there is a peg in the back for that as well... :P )

Well, I'm done!!! ;D ;D ;D although, I haven't had the courage to turn the horse into a piebald :-\

The second photo is on a shelf, which shows up the 3D better than on black card ;)

Due to the light, the shading on the rear back leg is actually black!!!   Just the base to paint black, then he's on his way ;)

Dear All,

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of Michael on 27th November.

Having not seen him on the forum for 2 weeks,  I emailed him last night to see if everything was OK.
This morning his Wife Angela emailed me back with this very sad news.

I met him and his wife in Kulmbach, where he was organising this project, and his enthusiasm was boundless and inspiring.  He was, as they say a real Gentleman and I for one, will miss his great sense of humour on here.

Angela has asked us to carry on with the project on his behalf, and I feel it will be a great tribute to him. She is now sending me the figures, so I will personally see this through.

It goes without saying, that our condolences and sympathies go out to Angela and all the Family, and we wish them all the best for the future.

Nicholas

Starting this again, as you know the figures where donated by the Plassenburg Figure Museum and organised by our late member and friend   Michael.

If you had a figure for the project you need to return it now!!, painted or not, painted ones will be displayed at Plassenburg with a mention to Michael.

Get your figure back to Nick or any committee member as soon as possible so this project can be completed

Big thanks in advance

But also, please prepare another one to be started at Kulmbach for the season 2017-2018 !!!

A new project? the figures need to be returned from the last project, if you still have one of the Mignot figures we need them now!

Start a new thread and talk about what can be done for the BFFS 30th birthday (-;

Post by: Brian on April 29, 2018, 03:29:02 AM

Well it been a long time, I think you have all had time to finish your figures so get them back to Nick!!

This was a special project , not just because Mignot figures are involved but it was Michael Hirise project with the society just before he died

I was told at the AGM that only 9 figures had been returned!!  come on you can do better then that!!!   get the figures finished and posted to Nick so a display is ready for Kulmbach.

If you join a project it is expected for you to do your bit, the figure is not yours but yours to paint and return, this was a special so don't lets mess it up.

You are correct Brian.

I have to do the same follow-up or the Sottish piekemen, Azincort knights and the dervish bust.  Itwill be done , tagte still this summer for the first two and a bit later for the last.

Then time to think to the next project 2018-2019 !!

The 2015 project is still going on!? I sent my completed piece back over two years ago... My 2017 pieces will be going back in a week or two.

As for a new project, try something that is NOT 1400 - 1865 and not Greek, Roman, or Middle Ages. Try pieces in the sci-fi, fantasy, or steampunk range - especially if you want to attract new people who are NOT middle-aged plus and gray haired. Seriously....

I am currently working on a 54mm Dark Elf Ranger flat.

You all have a very nice day...
