Intro and a few questions

I remembered that I have actually painted one more flat. Though I am not sure if it really qualify as such    It has quite a bit less details than most regular flat figures, and it's a bit thicker as well.


This is a keychain that I painted. Pooh is about 2.5 inches tall. Painted in oils. My plan was to paint all three and make a little display with a watercolor background. If I ever get around to work on it

Hello Willie! Sorry you couldn't get to the Chicago show. It was inspiring to see all the figures on display. The World Expo was the first show I have been to, other than the local shows here in the Mobile/Pensacola area.  I have not been to the Atlanta show yet, but the guys in the Panhandle Miniature Figure Society (Pensacola, FL) have been urging me to. Sounds like a fun show, and I will definitely try to make it there before long.

Thank you for your reply and extensive information! I have reached out to Brian about the Alice set.
The images in the gallery link you posted looks amazing. I still have a lot to learn.


That's a great step-by-step by Rick Taylor. I will need to study it. I noticed that he used oils. So far I have painted one figure with oils and one with acrylics. I think I like acrylics a bit better, but I am going to have to experiment some with oils as Rick outlined in that article.


That list of vendors ought to keep me busy for a while!

To deal with your questions:

- Alice in Wonderland figures are all still available from Western Miniatures.  There are a number of different sets - there are some catalog pages here:  http://www.intflatfigures.org/BFFS/Vendor%20Catalog/Western/

Brian King who is on the site may be able to help you in regards to pricing and or getting in touch with Western.  (You can also search the site for Western or Alice and find some information there as well.  Finally two other places to look for pictures is here:

Mike Taylor was the designer of these figures and the bulk of the flower fairies- Flower fairies are split between male and female figures with male being available from Western Miniatures - shown here again:

I have dealt with probably 10 different vendors on this list with always positive results.  Who you buy from is somewhat dependent on what you are interested in - regardless there is a wealth of choices.

I just joined here. My name is Donald and I'm from Alabama. I am new to painting flats. I've been painting figures for a few years, but I never paid much attention to flats. I've seen a few, but was never really that interested in them. Then at the World Expo in Chicago last summer I happened to set up my figures next to the display of Rick Taylor and was absolutely blown away by this:





There were so many amazing flats on display. I was especially impressed by this:



Does anyone know if this set of Alice flats is available to purchase somewhere?

I ended buying a couple of flats from Little Tin Soldier at the show, and am just about to finish those. This is the first one I painted. Its the Iris Fairy




I painted this one with oils. Looking back at it, I think the colors looks a bit flat, and I probably should have painted it with some more shadows and contrast. But at least I had fun working on it 


This is what I am painting right now. The Peaseblossom Fairy.

I am painting this one with Acrylics. I used some iridescent paint for the wings. Not sure if that was a good idea or not    If anyone has any feedback on what I have painted so far, please have at it. I am pretty thick skinned!


Does anyone know if there are more fairies in this series? And if so, where would be a good place to buy them? 


I am buying some more flats on Ebay right now, and I will browsing the old posts here in the forum for inspiration and ideas for cool figures to get
