Hello,
I started to paint some figures I bought at Kulmbach last year from Mr. Mineur
Showing horsemen from south Germany around 1500.
Some of them carrying lances. In battle they were used to support the more heavier armoured knight.
The other armed with crossbows. There is a report by Williebald Prickheimer who fought in the Schwabian war in 1499. He wrote that mounted crossbowmen shoot into the ranks of the enemy footsoldiers before the lancers attack.

Horses are very nicely painted !!!!
What is interesting with these larges pictures is to see the details and subtile colours used.
But what is also nice is to zoom out the pictures until the size is back to 30mm for the soldier, to appreciate the effect 'at normal eyes size" … (perhaps picture slightly too dark)
Congratulations, it is always a pleasure to see your painting, Christoph ….
-
Nice work again, Christoph!
According to Michel's advice, I tried out the size-reduction of the pictures, to "normal" 30 mm vision, and the effect is very interesting.
Propose to try it to everyone, the effect/outlooks of the figures is/are quite different!

Very nice work as usual, Christoph!
Your paint style, is very interesting for 30mm scale!
Claudio
-
Thank you.
here are the pictures close to 30mm size. So you don´t have to do it your self.
The large scale pictures are very good to learn about how other painters work.

Very nice paintwork!!
The banner is a Burgundian one?
Sandor
-
Thank You Sandor,
The banner is one of Maximilian I. but uses the burgundian elements. Maximilian was the son in law of Charles the bold and with him the burgundian cross become the sign of the troops of the Habsburger rulers in Germany and Spain. I´m not sure but I think it´s still in use today in the spanish army.

Hello,
here are some more figures, this time by different editors, but I think these figures will add well together with figures edited by Mr Mineur.
The fourth and the seventh from left edited by Stefan Koss.

Here is the next one.
This time a banner is included. It is based on an illustration in the Schilling chronical of Luzern from around 1513.

Claudio

Again, very good ! well done and keep them coming :)
-
I also like it, Cristoph!
It is a Burgundian standard, isn't it?
Sandor
-
Thank you.
@Sandor: You are right with the banner in some parts. The elements are Burgundy but it is a German Imperialist banner from the reign of Maximilian I. around 1500. When Maximilian married Mary of Burgundy (daugther of Charles the Bold) in 1477 he took over the heraldic signs of Burgundy and used them by himself.
He also took over what was left of Charles ordonnance companies and formed a unit of heavy horsemen called the "Welsche Garde" (the "foreign guard" in modern english, which means that the members of this unit not came from German countries). The Welsche Garde served for example in the Schwabenkrieg 1499 in South German and the Swiss.
In the Schilling Chronicle of Luzern a banner of this kind is shown two times in connection with the Schwabenkrieg and the treachery of Novara in 1500. Other Banners of this kind but without colours are shown in the book "Weisskunig" which tells about the live of Emperator Maximilian I.

Nice work, Cristoph!

Beautiful painting;
Your style of colorization has given definitively a personalized signature to these series, and which should receive a particular name or adjective.
Any proposal from the community? because it belongs to you Christoph!
-
Thank you all.
No idea for a name for that painting style, it´s just the way I paint. So if you like to name it go on and we´ll see what comes out.

Hello,

Hello,
here is a picture of tsome Stoll figures I have painted some years ago. But I think it fits into this topic well.
The banner shows the arms of the Markgraf of Baden.

as usual, wonderful painting, clean, very readible with the lining, clear, recognizable.
One suggestion perhaps ?: to distinguish the grey clothes from the metallic armour, you could apply some lightspots at brighest points of the metal ?
example below as attempt ....

Hello,
I tried, but it looks like I didn´t get this right in my painting light.
Maybe this one is a bit better.
Christoph
(https://abload.de/img/20120502_new7okpf.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=20120502_new7okpf.jpg)

Hallo Christoph,
Good attempt, but still insufficient for the following reasons, I think:
a) The spot lights are not white but light blue, still to reflect shining
b) The blue of the coat and the blue you use for the metal, are the same, keeping confusion between metal and clothes, and coat of arms : shey should better be distinct (like a cobalt blue for clothes for example)
c) the large blue coat worn by the knight over the armour has borders white, therefore looking like shiny, which confuses with metal. They should better be light blue and metal shiny pure white = metal have a colour different from clothing
I tried to adjust my thoughts in a drawing (increasing file size to do, then reducing back to smaller size), only to illustrate my comments.
But is was only a suggestion, don't feel committed to go further as I would myself.

Hello,
lockdown again I painted some more figures.
The first is a newly edited knight by Mr. Mineur.
(https://abload.de/img/21010201_neweqkup.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=21010201_neweqkup.jpg)
The next one is a mounted crossbowman also from Mr. Mineur. I did some changes by using "green stuff". The original figure can be seen on the rigth. I changed the helmet into a sallet and reworked the shoulders.

@Christoph, I do not want to crash your thread,
but you have the right headline.
A rider, who fits just beneath that line.

Hello Jörg,
no problem.
Nice effects with the gold on the armour!
Who ist the editor of this figure? Carl?
Here is a picture of the knights from Mr. Fechner, I mentioned in Snagys post.

Hello Christoph,
yes, the figure is from Carl / Cortum.
I removed his lance, that' why I can him only show from the back.
-
Very nice additions, what lieges are the knights connected to? Or what region of Europe are the subjects from?
-
@ John: The horsemen on the picture are not really heavy armed knights. they are more what was know as "Reisiger" or "Coustillier". Wearing lighter armour and the horses are mostly unarmoured.
The two middle figures are wearing german sallets. But this type of helmet was used in other parts of Europe as well. I paint them without any special sign for a certain nation but will use them as germans.
@ Jörg: okay, the missing lance confused me, now I know which figure it is.

Thank you! Fascinating period and flats . . .
