Post by: Brian on December 26, 2012, 08:50:59 AM
After the ongoing success of FIGUREWORLD 2012 this year its is with great pleasure to announce that there will be a FIGUREWORLD 2013

Date – Saturday 20th July 2013

Venue – Oundle School Great Hall, New Street, Oundle (near Peterborough), PE8 4GH

Over 20 traders attended in 2012, serving everything the figure modeller could want or need. There is a display area for clubs and individuals to display their models which must focus on figure subjects – historical, fantasy or sci-fi.

No competition is planned, the idea of the show being to get figure modellers together to chat, display their models and share ideas in a relaxed atmosphere.

If it can go wrong, it no doubt will,

The following health warning applies:-

I accept no responsibility, from damage caused by knocked over water jars and flying paint from tubes when  accidently lent on  and must point out that licking  one's brush can be harmful to ones health.     ;D ;D ;D ;D       This is going to be fun    ;) :-\

FigureWorld 2013

What, they're going to do it again ?

Oh no they're not !

Oh YES they are !

Look, pantomime season may well be long gone, but there's no reason not to hark back to the freezing days of winter...or was that last week..Still, it's nearly Spring, but I digress

So; FigureWorld; same place, same time of year, same people running it.

And yes, yet again it's going to be brilliant...Just like it was in previous years !

We're already beginning to organise this, and just so you can pencil the date into your diary, it's going to be on Saturday the 20th of July 2013 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Times for the show will be the same as last year - 9:30am until 16:30pm.

And just like last year there's a good amount of free parking. There will be a stall with refreshments, lots of traders and enough displays of model figures to please even the most jaded modeller. Yet again there's no competition to worry about and simply loads of figure modellers in attendance to chat about your favourite hobby with.

So there you go, early warning and "Reason Number One" for returning to FigureWorld in 2013 -

See, even now, we're just thinking of you !

FigureWorld 2013

The Paintathon.

Yes, we're doing this again on the Sunday, and hopefully you'll be able to join us at the FigureWorld venue with some paints, putty or just for a chat.

There isn't any entrance fee for the Paintathon, the idea being to offer the space for people to come along and paint or sculpt in a group, rather than as individuals at home.

Last year a lot of ideas seemed to get passed around, and different techniques were seen in use - far easier to actually see something done, than trying to explain it to someone in a "Step by Step article.

As we said last time, if you're travelling down to Oundle, why not make a weekend of it and come along to the Paintathon on the Sunday.

"Reason Number Two" for coming to FigureWorld in 2013 - Look at some models, buy some models, and even get chance to get started on something before leaving for home.

FigureWorld 2013

 The Trade Stands.

You came, you saw, you did a little shopping.

Yes, there is a global recession happening, and everyone’s tightening their belts.

However, with FigureWorld being pretty centrally located, it’s fairly easy to get to, and hopefully there’s not many folk having to travel five and six hours to get there.

With that in mind, we’ve invited the very best purveyors of resin, white metal and all those bits that you just can’t do without, and put them into two rooms so you can select exactly what you need for your next project.

Let’s face it, buying on the Internet is all well and good, but being able to look at the model you’re thinking of buying before parting with the hard earned cash is so much better – not to mention being able to take it home with you rather than waiting for the post.

It’s a few months away still, but that’s just another way of saying “there’s plenty of time to save up !”

So, Reason Number Three for getting to FigureWorld 2013 – more things to buy than you can shake a stick at, and possibly a few things to make a new stick out of when you’ve worn out the old one.

The show is still being held on Saturday the 20th July 2013 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.
And don’t forget the Paintathon on the Sunday: - 9:30am until 14:30pm

The Displays

Let’s face it, these are the stars of the show, the whole reason FigureWorld began !

In fact, we think it’s why FigureWorld continues to attract new friends every year.

No competition, no pressure, no judging gaffes; just lots of space to display your models and be able to discuss them and other people’s work with……well…. Other people.

The Basement’s whole idea behind FigureWorld is to get modellers together and talking. To see what each of us does, to talk about why we do it and how we do it, and perhaps to give each other ideas about new projects or types of figure we’d like to tackle in the future.

Struggling with that latest project ?

Can’t quite get the effect you want ?

Just plain difficult to find the motivation to paint ?

All good reasons to chat to people who do what you do – they’ve probably been there before and very probably have a good solution for it.

Obviously we’re contacting the same clubs and forums as last year to support the display area:-

The White Rose Society.
 The British Model Soldier Society
 The British Flat Figure Society.
 Darlington Model Club
 Platoon Brittanica
 Jolly Bodgers
 SouthWest Figure Modellers

But what about those folk from The Basement – now the forum’s closed its doors. Well, that’s no problem, simply because there’s still the same amount of space, and if you’re not a member of one of the above clubs or forums, then you’re welcome to join the main “open” display space – which is part of where the guys running the show will be displaying their models..

So, just like last year, you’re still invited to come along and put on a display of figures, because that’s what Figureworld’s all about.

If you’re a club that’s not been mentioned above, but would like to have space allocated for a figure display, then please contact Robert Lane at elanlane13@btinternet.com

So there you go, “Reason Number Four” for returning to FigureWorld in 2013 – Not only are you worth it, your models are too !

FigureWorld 2013

 The knowledge

It’s what we all want, but it can’t be bought.

Simply put, there were approximately 250 people at FigureWorld last year, one or two with fifty years or more in the hobby, some with as little as one or two years or less.

If you average it out at 10 years of modelling experience per person though, that’s two and a half thousand years of knowledge ( and some did agree with the comment I’d made about getting that amount from Rob Lane alone ).

Somewhere in there, there’s got to be that little fact, that small piece of something that you can’t quite figure out, that could be solved for you simply by talking to someone.

Because that’s what FigureWorld is all about – getting modellers together, discussing projects and model related problems, and hopefully using that vast store of knowledge to help each other get the finish we hope for on the latest model.

It’s all very well seeing photographs on the ‘net” or via e-mail, but actually holding a piece and being able to turn it around and see properly the effects that have been rendered, or alternatively be able to describe a problem to someone verbally rather than long-winded text based conversations; well, you just can’t beat being with other modellers in real time in the flesh.

Better still, on the Sunday, there’s the Paintathon where people can actually show you how things are done, or you can show them exactly how you produce what you’ve done.

So there you go, “Reason Number Seven” for returning to FigureWorld in 2013 - because two hundred and fifty ( or more ) minds are better than one.

The show is being held on Saturday the 20th of July 2013 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.
And don’t forget the Paintathon on the Sunday: - 9:30am until 14:30pm

The Social side

O.K. we mentioned the displays last time, and we’ve told you about the Paintathon too, but what about night time if you’re staying over for the weekend.

Want to talk to the guys who run FigureWorld ?

Or just want to chat with other figure modellers there to attend the show ?

During the day of the show and the Paintathon, the refreshments room will be open next to the Great Hall in Oundle School.

In the evening there’s one of two pubs to be in - both in Oundle, and both close together. One is The Ship Inn, and the other is The Talbot. Both serve good food and even better beer, and after 8pm, you’ll probably find one or two modellers ( O.K. probably more than one or two modellers actually ) in either one of those establishments….or both, on the Friday and Saturday nights – 20th and 21st July respectively.

The show is still being held on Saturday the 20th of July 2013 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.
And don’t forget the Paintathon on the Sunday: - 9:30am until 14:30pm

So there you go, “Reason Number Five” for returning to FigureWorld in 2013 – Beer and food – can’t paint with ‘em, but can’t live without ‘em.

The Ideas

They say that there’s nothing new under the sun…….they also say that I began Reason 7  in exactly the same way last year…..and they’d be absolutely right.

But if you’ve got a winning team, with a great product……well why change ?

 So, the ideas.

Yes, there’s so many models to see at FigureWorld, you’ve be hard pressed not to have that eureka moment hit you at some point during the show.

With all the different people present at the show, there’s bound to be plenty of help in bringing your new ideas into reality, the encouragement of fellow modellers, and not to mention the variety and depth of their skills, all so easily tapped, simply be turning round and chatting to the folk around you.

With modelling seeming to advance at such a pace over the past couple of years, surely the best place to be to improve, or even to just discuss new projects is in a room full of like minded souls.

And that’s what we’re aiming for – cross pollination of ideas it’s called these days. We just think it’s a darn fine excuse to get away for a weekend and meet with old friends.

So there you are, Reason 7 – the ideas and enthusiasm – we’re doing it just for you !

The show is being held on Saturday the 20th of July 2013 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.

Reason 9 or maybe not !

The Demonstrators.

No, not a group of people with placards complaining about something; not that at all.

No, our Demonstrators are the helpful type, people who come along to share with you, the visitor, their years of knowledge and expertise. And this year weve got some that return for yet another session of showing exactly that can be done, alongside a couple of new chaps ready and willing to give their time freely to you the visitors.

Situated for easier access in the refreshments room  yes, you can have a cuppa and a snack whilst you quiz them on that nugget of information you need to get the effect you really need, but havent nailed yet !

So, who do we have ?

Well, returning for a third time is the superb Dave Maddox  both a talented sculptor as well as a master with airbrush and conventional bristled brushes, Dave has garnered Gold Medals at Euro Militaire, SCHAMMS along with many Best of Show awards in the UK. and is a noted judge at several prestigious shows including Darlington, Welling and Euro Militaire. Also of note are Daves articles  several of which have appeared in Military Modelling magazine over the years.

New to the seated panel this year is Conrad Mynett ( Prawnpower )  again a multiple medal winner at Euro Militaire for his fantasy pieces, but also winner of Best of Show at Salute last year, which took him across the Atlantic to enter in the Crystal brush awards. Here he received several medals recognising his fine work. Like Dave, Conrad has established himself at the UK shows with several Best of Show awards and also Conrad has enjoyed success at the French Golden Demon awards  last year picking up a demon for one of his entries.

Also joining the demonstration panel this year is Nick Ball, a painter noted for his flat figures and who has gained Gold Medal status at Euro Militaire, several Best of Show medals on the UK circuit and is very quickly becoming the leading light of flat figure painting within the UK.

Together, these three fellows have more than enough knowledge of painting techniques to furnish you with answers to any questions you may have. Theyll have a selection of examples of their superb work on show, and as has been said many times before, reading about how to do something can be very informative; but its nowhere near as good as having the expert right there to talk you through and possible even show you how a particular technique is achieved.

So, Reason number 9 for coming to FigureWorld 2013. The Demonstrators. Because not only do they represent Championship quality and skill, theyre some of the most pleasant and enthusiastic figure painters youre likely to meet.

The show is still being held on Saturday the 20th of July 2013 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.

Just back today from an ACW  Battlefield fest and loved every minute. The 150th anniversary re-enactment at Gettysburg was amazing. I'm now refreshed and looking forward to doing more Civil War figures in the future.
I finished the following five figures before I went but didn't release them as I was waiting for the painted figures to arrive, these will be released at Figure World and will be added to my website in the next day or so.

! ) Johnny Reb  120mm ACW semi flat figure.
2) Billy Yank      120mm ACW semi flat figure.
3) General Antoine Lasalle 120mm Napoleonic semi flat figure
4) French Light Inf Carabinier 1796. 120mm  Napoleonic semi flat figure
5) Tzar Nicholas 11 . 120mm semi flat figure
I'll post pictures in the morning in the news thread.
See you at FW

Well good weekend, BFFS was given a warm welcome and 2D sold many figures thanks to Chris, Nicks demo was well received! I did try and put him off a few times but he carried on ;D   Eric was on hand for knowledge and advice on flats and breakfast ;)  he also had some lovely painted 30mm's not just his but from some of the best painters in flats.

Martin was there and I managed to have a bit of a chat about the shows and a few ideas where aired.

On the Sunday was a group paint morning, guys from the basement and a few clubs sit and paint and chat, not wanting to be left out the four of us decided to paint a figure, yep one figure with the handy work from all four of us, I'll get a photo on the site later but remember the light was poor, the brushes poor and some had the wrong glasses on  ;D ;)  this figure was painted in one and a half hours as we spent most of the time talking and did not got it finished but you'll see it later :o

But thanks guys for a good weekend!!

Well that was a great weekend at Figureworld. A big well done to Brian for having courage to take the plunge
to set up 2D. It was a pleasure to help sell figures to people some people that had not painted flats before.
Also to people that were flat painters. It was a new in site for me to be working on a trade stand.
The sale of the figures was very steady all day. We had ladies buying to this is good for the hobby  .
Brian did what he dose well he calls it net working i call it walk about  ;D  ;D.
If ever you need help at show on the stand you can really on me to help, Brian it was a pleasure to help 2D also
promote flat figures.
As for Nick he bid his painting demo, he managed to get both hands to shake together well done, been there got the t-shirt on that one. Will put your name down for more demos at shows  ;D
Eric are French cousin made the trip across the channel he brought figures that he painted and also figures by other painters from his collection. Some of the figures were very old it was nice to see how figure have changed over the many years that flats have been about. Thanks Eric for making the trip.
Also a great time was had by us on the Friday and Saturday evening with nice meals and few glasses of beer only a few well more than a few ;) ;)
On a last note Brian 2D figures is the way forward to promote flat figures. To old and new painters just think that if you had not set up 2D these new people would not get there hands on flat figures to get started.
So all credit to you for taking the plunge to start 2D figures.
Last thank to the show organizers of Figureworld for putting on a good show hope it all happens again next year.
Chris

Only went for the Saturday and had a great day. Passed my two painted 30mm ACW flats over to Brian which he duly added to the collection, many thanks. Succumbed to Brian's charms and bought a couple of flats; the guy on the Harley chop and Jackson sitting on a split rail fence, there may be a boxed diorama waiting to happen with those  :-\
Hope to go for the whole weekend next year to make the most of the social side!

Cheers

Jon

As promised, here's the photo of an hour and half's work between 3 1/2 painters. Just a reminder it's 54mm, the light was poor, the paints were unfamiliar to three of us and we were busy chatting, but this is the result.

Now be gentle with us and remember we did also have a bit of a hangover  ;)

After reading Chris's bit you can all call me Sir Brian ;D ;D

Believe me I do not do this selling lark on my own, Christine, Chris, and Nick all help in a big way to bring flats to the public as I'm sure other members do to promote the BFFS, just wish there where more  ;D

As the only french (there was also a belgian, but he lived in England) I confirm it was very nice WE and I wish we can continue to promote flats and the society by being present in other shows
Hope many other bffs members could contribute

Some pictures of the nice WE we had in Oundle, a really beautiful little town (look at the Ship Inn picture)
As you will see the exhibition hall was of a very high standard, situated in an old school, with plenty of room for everybody
As usual the three musketeers were there (d'Artagnan took the picture)

There is an intruder in one of the photos; the first who find him will have my congratulations

I did not dare to make pictures of the beer competition; but the liquid was good

Nice pics. Who are the Three Musketeers in the pic - left to right? I don't know anyone to put faces to forum names. The venue looks great, good lighting from the windows. It seems the vast majority of the attendees are middle-aged or older. The ACW display looks nice; I was initially picturing a basic frame and black velvet background. The graphic was a nice touch.

Great job everyone!

I see that our three travelers a good time (slim) figure with big figures in flat. 8)

if I understand correctly, but this is not yet the end result.
Thus, the statements of the panel will look bigger.
The idea is great!
Keep it up .... :)

It would be nice,
when the figures below not only the name of the artist is, but also what uniform and directed element to return.
To see and lending professionals, a successful figurative uniform panel   :o :o :o :o

But it is still not completely there is a transitional solution .....
