Title: Bugle Call - Sunday, 26th November
Post by: plyoung on November 30, 2017, 04:57:14 PM

 Dear All,
Brian and Christine Keywood and I had an enjoyable day representing the BFFS at the above event last Sunday.  Our society had been invited by the Bristol branch of the British Model Soldier Society to display flats at the annual show of the South West Figure Modellers, in Nailsea, just south of Bristol.

This show is advertised as “Probably the largest exhibition of military models in the South West” of England.  It certainly lived up to its boast - the quality of the figures was awesome.  There were numerous displays of models including fantasy figures, aircraft, ships and miniature figurines. Ken, a BFFS member, was manning his club's stand and had included some of his flats along with his round figures.  Gary, another exhibitor was skilfully sculpting the head of a Landsknecht figure- it was superb.  I think he should apply to exhibit portrait heads in a fine art exhibition!

Many of the other pieces I saw were also of a very high standard.  Among my favourites were two First World War, Royal Marines Light Infantry figures in their dishevelled but distinctive blue uniforms and peakless service caps and, two busts of Second World War figures representing the London Fire Service and the Police Force.

A big "Thank you" to the organiser, Kevin Peart, for inviting us and for supplying the following information: There were 38 clubs in attendance including a Company of Chivalry living history group; twelve trade stands occupied a number of rooms (and, in one of them, it was good to see Dick Jenkins again); and about 125 people visited the show. And I must add that the venue, at Nailsea School, and the food were excellent!

Finally, we were given some leaflets advertising model shows for the first half of  2018. Those interested should make a note of the following dates and places:

24th March – Yeovil Model Show at Bucklers Mead Academy, Yeovil, BA21 4NH

25th March – 'FigureWorld West' at Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy, Stoke-on-Trent, ST3 3JD (

26th May – IPMS Torbay & South Devon Model Show (no address supplied) (

30th June – Plymouth Model Show at Plymouth Guildhall, PL1 2AA

Best wishes,

Dear Mike,
Thanks for your message.  For the next edition of the Journal I've added more information about the two Royal Marine figures, corrected a couple of my errors regarding some other figures and included captions for those images on the website.  Jerry Mortimer, the editor, is putting the Winter 2017 edition together right now so that it can be with us before Christmas.  Enjoy!

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours, and to all the other users of this wonderful website.
