Title: Harlequin - my first flat model WIP

Last year on the SMC in Eindhoven (NL) I got my first flat. Normally I only paint 30mm 3D miniatures (mainly fantasy female figures) so this is a bit different ofcourse and I think I can use all good advice. Obviously she is far from finished, but maybe there are things I should know, common mistakes etc. Thank you all!

Very impressive for a first flat !!
Magnificient hand-free paintings too ...

I have given a bit more lighting to the photograph ... a bit Under-exposed..

When you will have completed to surfaces, more highlights have to be given to the surfaces getting the light directly (top of head, right arm, the top of the wrists, .. ), and more shadwos on the opposite sides (along the right arm bottom left, the bottom of the wrists, neck and the right cheek, roundness of the bottom of the right 'jaw.  Darkened shadows on the right arm Under the left fore-arm, and on the body too = wider than just a thin lining, willgive more 3-D effect.

Also your hands-free drawings myst be darkened in the shadows and lightended slightly when exposed to the light (upper right ..)


Excellent melting of the tones in the clothing and skin... Congratulations Bren!

X2 on the skin tones! Also take another look at the shading/highlighting on the white and gold balls on the headpiece and the ruffles on the wrists.


Oils or acrylics ...and what piece is this?

Yes, of course, I gave the main points, then come the détails, and I can see all paintings are not complete yet ...

Here are some adjustments on computer...
The hands, the arm, the red cloth, gold buttons, wrists, neck, cheek ... = emphasize light and darkness.

There is even more to do with the head, right shoulder, and even increase shadows more to give more visual rondness !!!

Wow, thank you all :-) ofcourse she needs more work, the golden bells/balls are only yellow basecoated and the white on the fluffy balls is only the white spray basecoat. There will be more freehands on the purple parts as well. I'm not used to create a 3d effect yet since I only painted 3d models before, so that's really new for me. But fun to try something new.

This is acrylics, I don't know the manufacturer, maybe if I find the original bag it was in when I bought it. I'll post new pictures again when she's more finished.

For a first flat Bren, it's pretty neat.  I am please you are enjoying it, flats are nice to paint too.

You will learn a fair bit about light, when you do rounds you can put this this into your painting, it makes the rounds more interesting as well.
