Orange shmorange
PJDeluhery:
All I can say is have a go and experiment. It's classic color theory.
Joerg:
@Ed,
I propose to shade any yellow (and brown) with violett. Just try it.
Other pairs I mad egood results with
red - cyan blue
green - red (or greenish sepia)
blue - orange mixed with dark blue => brown
Ed Humphreys:
I hadn't actually seen this theory put into words, but I suppose I must be using it when I shade cadmium yellow with cobalt blue and burnt sienna.

Blue!? You just blew my mind (no pun intended). I understand that could work on a canvass with room for subtle blending, but does it work well on a 30mm flat? I'm fascinated
PJDeluhery:
I shade with complimentary colors. The compliment for orange is blue.
Here's a link that will explain it.

There's much on the internet on color theory, so if you google that subject you will find many sites with explanations.
Hope this helps.
