Well, I took the question as an inspiration for carrying out a census.
The result surprised me:

1.)  How many flats do you have painted and unpainted?
3148 figures , 79 per cent painted, 21 per cent unpainted

- Are these concentrated in any specific time period?
      a lot Napoleonics and Baroque

2.)  How many years have you collected flats?
     almost 40

3.)  First set .
      a couple of Tournament Knights (when I was around 7 years);
first set I bought myself (14 years) was half a dozen Prussian 1813 Landwehr

4.)  Favorite set.
Too many favourites for name one.

And, as I mentioned - I was surprised, because I always guessed the number beeing 5000 to 6000 figures.

A noble attempt Andrew and still impressive total of figures.

In my case I keep an electronic record of my collection which has pictures of the figures as well as any materials I have collected about them for painting - sort of an electronic notebook.  That makes it fairly easy to guestimate the overall number of figures.

Once one starts to hit the thousands of figures counting them is a bit daunting.

mark  8)

P.S. And yes Andrew I like to look at my unpainted figures as well.  Some of the engraving is truly a work of art on many of these fellows.

There was a collection going in pieces on Ebay recently where all of his figures where unpainted and polished - all first rate castings as well.  And yes my wife thinks me crazy but, at least she knows where to find me...

Since this topic has been posted I tried to count the figures, it‘s alright with painted, easy enough, but I never count unpainted part before, as  they are raw material which (sorry for hurting someone’s fealings) does not worth to be counted unless in kg or plates or boxes. Off course, I admire them and as most of us I spend hours looking at them (hopefully I am not alone with that mania?). Some of these figures are even much better unpainted!
Anyway, after reaching the 1000 unpainted figure and looking at more boxes to be opened and then to be counted I decided that minimum has been achieved. From my point of view the total number is between 1500–1800, not more than 2000 according to „Peace and Demilitarization Treaty“ introduced by my wife after several years ago, when I had to sell most of my collection probably 5000-6000 figures which now I do not remember and do not miss them either.
It is mich more easier with painted: 125 figures, all in front of me. ;D

My first figure back in 1991 was Napoleon at Arkole, but now I can not say for sure was it Gottstein‘s or Segom‘s. Since my first attempt, I presume, I have painted five of them.
And favorite is a wonderful set engraved by Frank and edited by Rolf Neckel „Langen Kerls“ or Potsdam Giant Guard. The set was first introduced back in 1934 by Gustav Kemnow.
Unfortunately, nowadays the quality of casting is very poor, specially of privates.

It looks like I'm one of the most junior !!!
Still a long way to go then!

No Michel, you're not alone .... because i made lot of things : modelcar kit 1/43 (white metal only) round figure and flat for the distraction

1- Painted less than 50, unpainted less than 100 ... no specific period
2- 10-15 years
3 - First set : Quadriconcept but not sure
4 - Favorite set ... Mohr-Casanova or Lepeltier set

Hi, this is not a simple question really.
I have always had the doubt how to count the figures.

A group of five figures is 1 figure or 5 figures ?  after all when you paint it ( and also when you buy it) are 5 figures not 1.

The same with a mounted figures; a single foot figures is 1 but also a single horse not mounted is 1, when you paint a mounted figure you paint 2 figures.

1.)  How many flats do you have painted and unpainted? More then 10.000, almost 1000 painted   - Are these concentrated in any specific time period? Medieval and renaissance

2.)  How many years have you collected flats? almost 35

3.)  First set . Not sure some figures of Lehmann if I remember well

4.)  Favorite set. Mohr peasant war.

Just as the others have said, very interesting...
Unfortunately I am not skilled enough to paint to the quality that I collect but it does not stop my love of the art of the flat!
Nearly all my flats are painted, on both sides, 30mm. most likely in excess of 2000.
I have been collecting since 2002
My first sets were 2 of Vladislav Yankovsky small boxed sets Napoleon and Staff at Borodino 1812 and Kutuzov and Staff at Borodino 1812.
I still think these are my favorite sets.
I have sets from ancient Egypt thru WWII but my favorite is the Napoleonic period though there is few more beautiful figures than a well done Knight in Armor!
My collection is like a living thing, usually growing but I often sell to purchase better quality sets.
I have several figures from Artist here on the forum, they are some of my finest pieces and they will never leave my collection!

1.)  How many flats do you have painted and unpainted?
Painted: since 2013:  about 100 flats, 25 figurines until 2013.  Before, sailing ships in modelism, since 2012, acrylic painting with figurines for 18 months, then move to oil painting and flats in 2013
Over 1000 unpainted or painted by others
- Are these concentrated in any specific time period?
No, fantasy, fantastic, all sizes incl. busts, in history = till but excluding Napoleonic period, any size (20mm to 180mm)

2.)  How many years have you collected flats?
             4 last years (mid-2013)

3.)  First set :  30 mm trumpet of 7e rgt French Hussars, reason for rejecting Napoleonic period, too lenghty discussions over uniformology with "experts" with too many divergences !!  The second was a fantsay bust of 160mm of Mil-Mart

4.)  Favorite set :  all kinds, but nowadays: 30mm antiquity, middle age (cruzades, knights) and busts

Interesting topic but not easy to answer :

1- around 500 unpainted

    around 2000 painted (90 % flats)
85 % are from the Napoleonic time

2- When a was a little boy I usually played with toy soldiers, then I began to collect them when I was 15/16 years old (I have now 56 !)
3 - Prussian Landwehr (I have still the set even if the painting was a manufactory painting)
4 - perhaps Mignot the "holy coach" with Napoléon but I like them all !

I have about six pieces in various sizes (mostly large). Two of these are for the 2018 BFFS painting project and both are well underway. I prefer larger pieces, but this is further governed by subject/genre and quality of engraving. I don't collect individual pieces or buy sets.

That is a interesting Topic, so here are my answers:

1. maybe around 1000 unpainted (I don´t really count them. The plan is to stop buying figures in one or two years and then paint all the figures in store. But I´m pretty sure that I will miss the stop point).
And I think I have around 600 painted figures.

Generelly for around 1470 (Burgundy) up to 1700 but mainly TYW, with a growing part of Landsknechts

2. I started as a boy, but stopped again of some reasons (girls, partys, education...) and started 6 years ago collecting.

3. My first figures as a boy were some turkish figures by Neckel and 6 years ago I started with the murdering of Wallenstein by Zimmermann

4. I do not really have a favourite set. I like well engraved figures drawn by Martin Block and Ludwig Frank figures.

Roughfly :

1- 1000 unpainted (I had a lot more)
500 painted by myself (but I think I painted twice this number )
     500 painted by "old masters"
    1000 factory painted old figures
My preferred periods run from Antiquity to Renaissance and some XVIII° century
2- I started more than 50 years ago and really went back to flats 35 ago after a detour by round figures
3 - Some Mignot french 1745 Musketeers when I was 14
4 - Golden Fleece (Armont, Maër), Field of the clothe of Gold (Gottstein), Court of Louis XIV (Mignot), Louis XIV staff (Gottstein), Conquest of Algeria (Mignot) and war elephants and chariots
Bur I cannot say I have a "preferred" set

1) How many flats do you have painted and unpainted? 110 painted and 35 unpainted (21 %). Are these concentrated in any specific time period? 39 % late medieval and renaissance, 30 % from rococo up to age of Napoleon, 25 % early 20th Century
2)How many years have you collected flats? Only a bit over 2 1/2 years, since January-February 2015.
3) First set? Lecke's Hole in the Fence, sole set from the whole time period after 1815.
4) Favourite set? Maybe Public Women's bathrooms 1500 or Morning toilet 1780, both by Mohr (59 % of my figures are by him).
