It is very interesting to so the different styles of painting and to learn about the ways other paint their figures.
Do not worry Eric, I´m not changing my own style, I just do some experiments, like the colour of the armour and so one. But it would be a bit boring to do it the same way year for year. For myself I´m like to look around and see where I can develope my own painting but I would not change it completely.

Re: German Horsemen 1525of this lining effect
« Reply #5 on: January 04, 2018, 04:41:30 AM »
Thank you for your useful comments, Christoph,
I got some acrylics to go to coloured undercoating, with some grisaille to build the lights and shadows before attacking the oil painting and finishing.
I will try this black undercoating with a next 30mm flat to make use of this lining effect, which I find fantastic for small size to bring a distinct reading of the details ... And perhaps do the same figure with a traditional white undercoating to compare, then a coloured grisaille ...
An interesting experiment ! but without mastering the techniques yet, so as preliminary attempt!

It is useful to try various techniques, to change, discover, improve and share the experience with others !!
Main purpose of the forum, I am convinced.

Hello Hannibal,
thanks for your help. Yes I should paint the legs of the horse different (more ligth to those in front). I don´t use thrown shadows till now but I will test it.

Normally I use a black undercoat an then starting with the colour from dark to light in some cases some nearly with colours at the end to give a greater effect.
When I´m painting the black horse tail I just paint with a very thin White colour directly on the undercoat. Also the lining ist part of the undercoat.
(I use Acryl colours).

It is quite interesting, I never thought of comics when I was painting flats but it was mentined to me from different people.
When I started painting I thinking about a style which can be used in dioramas with many figures where Details can be seen easy.

I like very much the manner you apply the lining to all details, similar technique to the drawing of comics.
It make the figure very easy to read, in all details even at distance !!
I am interested to undertsan dhow you obtain this in more details:
1) is undercoat painted in black?
2) is the lining done before application of the colours?
3) Do you add the lining with diluted black painting with a white spirit or turpentine and the brush, by capillarity?

perhaps I asked this question earlier, I have to search in all your past Q&A, because I am interested for 30mm flats!!!!
Congratulations .
Detail: I suggest to darken the right horse legs that are behind the horse body, and therefore more in the darkness; it will increase the three dimensional effect. You cn also add some thrown shadow of the arm on the ritter's leg, of the sword onto the leg and horse, on the rene on the horse collar, ...
A few are enough to create the effect ....
I will read your past panting with a great interest !!

Hello,
starting the new year with two german horseman of the italian wars around 1525. Both are so called "Reissige" (not knighted armoured horseman).
Edited by Stefan Koss from Vienna.
I´m doing some tests with the colour of the armour at the moment, so the right one is a bit darker then the left. I like the darker one more because it looks more three dimensional.
The helmet of the left one is painted red as shown by Dürer and some other scoures.
The colours of the rigth horse I tried to copy a horse of a burgundy trumpeter, shown here by Eric some months ago, but it´s not half as good as he had done it.
