First question, is the plan to frame them so are we painting one or two sides?

As I dont know what you've all got,  it will be framed so one side is fine ;)

;) does that mean I will have to  be nice to you and talk to you to get my flat.

One side sounds good gives me a better chance of finishing it.

Yep!  ;D

You still get to paint two sides as theres two figures to do ;)

I went from one side of which is painted, so two types.  ;)
Why struggle when the connection is tightened around it with a picture frame! :o

So! Pick out the most beautiful figures page and bring it forward. ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: Forum Project Again - a thought (or a question?)
Post by: Joerg on April 08, 2013, 01:48:50 PM
Today I received a lettre surprise.
Though I did not volunteer for this project I will face the challenge and paint the figures.

But this evolves a question:
Last year (or already the other year?) a collector friend proposed to paint Ancient figures and show them in a sample.
The same year Martin Sutor proposed to paint a figure - the Landsquenet and show the results in a sample.
Now we have a "Forum project" and show the results in a sample....

Will all this lead to a Society of Sample painters with ever changing time-focus?

To avoid a misunderstanding - I do not think this a bad idea, I just wonder, if this is going to be the deeper beeing in our Society......
And, I frankly confess - all my attempts to do this with my local collecting mates (when I fixed the suject) failed by now  ;)

Regards
Joerg

Joerg yes, I sent you the figures as I assumed you would like to be part of the project, and as a good friend hoped you didn't mind painting just two more pieces.

We've only had two completed projects in the last few years, first the 2007 project  [attach=1]

And a year later fashion through the ages project    [attach=2] these two are the only one's shown at shows.

Others we've done have fallen to the side or still in the process of being framed, like the  Landsquenet ( can't spell that one! ) so the idea is to try and keep you intrested and busy painting

This is the photo I've got   [attach=1] and you had the one from the USA as well  [attach=2]

Do we want to do this again to help with the cost of the table this year?

I can provide a painted figure and make the display like last time
Can we find about ten people for a display ?
If we want to sell the figures it should be better paint two sides
The deadline for giving the figures should be mid-july

Brain has also convinced me to paint two figures.  :-\
Since I'm biased as a creator, my niece (11 years) taken out two figures from the figures boxes.
So I have now my project!  :o :o :o
I chose the painting of colorful exotic birds.

It does not have to look all gray and blue. Since there are enough units and federal acts, everyone should find his. ;)

Stay tuned .... :) :) :)

Received two figures in today's mail. At 30mm, I can see I'm going to be wearing my magnifying glasses for the duration. How are these figs to be mounted? They're two sided and I don't know if I'm to paint one side or the other or both. So many choices...

Glen
Title: Re: Forum Project Again!
Post by: Brian on April 14, 2013, 05:36:26 AM
Glen they will be frame mounted so one side needed but two if you like ;)

Are we OK with uniform details? Wolfgang has suggested we give you a lead, what do you think would it help?
Title: Re: Forum Project Again!
Post by: Glen on April 14, 2013, 12:43:36 PM
If the figures are generic, I have color refs for the uniforms and equipment. If they are of a specific unit, I'll need the specifics that are outside whatever is standard issue. The Union guy seems to be a dispatch runner or medic; there's no weapons, just a uniform and shoulder bag. The Reb is in full kit - weapon, carry bag, canteen, bedroll, etc., plus what I assume is a basic gray uniform. If he's late war, then some items could be painted as civilian (e.g. pants/shirt).

Title: Re: Forum Project Again!
Post by: Glen on April 17, 2013, 11:46:47 AM
Two questions about the two ACW figs... Both are depicted running and are two-sided. My plan, based on comments above, is to paint one side, but... is there any preference for which way the figure is facing? My Union guy, running to the right, depicts the face and the shoulder bag. Running lift shows a partial face and a canteen. The Reb running right shows a profile face, rifle, and partial bedroll. Running right shows the profile face, haversack, canteen, partial bedroll, and partial gun.

Next, is there a preferred light direction? I tend to paint light coming from the upper front left, but to me both figures are more interesting running to the right and I'm thinking a light source from the upper front right might be more suitable.

Comments?

Cheers,

Glen

Hello Glen

Your Malstill with light direction is absulut.
There is no prescribed direction in the moving the respective parties.

Thus YOU decide for yourself which side is the chocolate side. Can you try by bemalung the pages irrespectively specify which type you're holding in your hands. :o :o :o :o ::) ::) ::) ::)
For easy determination of the characters, "footboard" :D

TYPE = gunner it will be medicine or engineering units
U.S. = Union
CS = Southern

You can allso as they paint as you wish under observance of badges and particular appearance of. ::) ::)

Post by: Brian on April 18, 2013, 06:50:21 AM
Wolfgang's right, you decide which side to paint, no light restrictions all we're asking is do your best
as they will be on display ;)

Now photo's of the finished figures are welcome on site, already had one set finished so over to you and see what you can do :)

Ok, thanks. I just didn't want to assume what I was planning was correct only to find out differently later on. I have a four day show (ReaperCon) where I'll be manning our club table starting this afternoon. I figure (ha!) I can get some cleanup, priming, and some painting done. The rest of April and all of May will be dodgy due to the Tulsa Show on 1 June. I have two scratch flats to sculpt and paint. No pressure...

Post by: Jon P on April 22, 2013, 06:23:53 AM
Got mine from Brian when he and Nick came to visit us at Salute on Saturday :D
 Brian made me open the envelope there and then to see what I had got and they are;
CS38 Confederate infantry man marching, port arms.
CS51 Confederate officer in kepi advancing with pistol.

Having had a bit of a chat with Brian and Nick I have decided to paint both sides of the figures but do a different unit for each side.

Favourites so far are;

The officer; 1st US Sharpshooters (all green) & NY Zouaves (blue coat, red Kepi and trousers)
The Infantryman; probably Confederate state infantry (generic cadet grey & coloured facings)  and 79th New York regt (blue jacket & tartan trousers).

I'll get some pictures up when I start.

I have loads of ACW |Uniform reference books as it is one of my areas of interest so if you need any ideas or inspiration please feel free to get in touch.

Roger,
the figures are chosen so that a Jenkie (U.S.) number that can be painted as a Rebel.
Thus arose the order that you have two equal confederates .....
The catalog is not the final decision but your quaint designing.  ;) ;)

But!  :o :o
Roger, no, you made no errors.

Eric,
am not quite sure ... :o
keppi of this has a light gray stripe at the top?
if yes, then it could be a gunner it easy Crenshaw's battery from Richmond to be.
The lower edge is dark blue (not black!)
On the keppi also decoration (yellow) running with the seam of the substance ..
The lieutenant needs another yellow ornaments on the side of the forearm.
The collar are two parallel was yellow clips. ;) ;)

 The U.S. man, looks good too. :) :) :)

I also have an officer requiring a trefoil on his kepi and his cuffs which is quite a challenge in this size.

OK. When the Civil War Started in 1860 most of the states had volunteer militia units. These where call Lincoln's 90 day wonders for the North. The uniforms that they started the war with where the standard 1858 uniforms with the long coat for the regular Army and the Hardee Hat.  Volunteer units where very different. They ranged from Zouaves, Chasseurs, Highlanders . Uniforms ranged from Gray for the Union to blue for Confederacy. At the first Bull Run you could not tell who was who on the battle field. By late 1862 uniforms where becoming the standard civil war uniform. The short sack coat, the forage cap.  I would recommend the follow books. I hope these will help and you did good on those uniform. Willie

                    1. Echoes of Glory Arms and Equipment of the Union, Confederacy by Time Life. these two are outstanding because they have color photos of everything from the war.

As a complete beginner need a little pointing in the right direction.

Well, here they are. Finished the artilleryman yesterday and the infantryman today. The artilleryman is finished as a munitions runner of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, CSA. The infantryman is your basic grunt. Both took about three hours each (three hour-ish long CDs in the changer) and are painted with Reaper acrylics. I'll take them to Tulsa at the end of the month and then mail them back to Brian.

As always, Qs and Cs are welcome.

But it was probably also the good quality of the figures that convinced ...... HA HA HA ;D ;D ;D

A Tip! They hate darkness and be naked because they are suited daylight ....

Cheers Brian,

I'd go for the 79th New York and the Marine Officer.

The 79th New York styled themselves on the 79th Highlanders and started as a social club in 1858. They povided the honour guard for the Prince of Wales when he visited the US.

How many participants were participated to the project?
I remember that there were 15 or 17 groups that were raffled off.
On the Presentations of Brain are only 10 groups of participants.
Who are the other artists?
Is it possible all individual figures and assignments on a gallery-side (show) to save?

I am very gladly you, with my characters for another project for disposal! :)

Wolfgang, 23 pairs were sent out (some from my own stash), 10 have been returned plus yours and mine which makes 13 pairs are still out there and they are.

ED, Mark, Martin, Jacques, John Fitzgerald, Ken Farrar, Benedict, Rosthwitha, Chris, Nick, Rob Hacker, Frank.H, and Malcolm.
So if you see your name you still have our figures, please send them home as soon as you can ;)
