Opened one post, but for Gallery of pictures, rejected, because no Hannibal category is existing and introductin steps requires to select a category ...

In general the only requirement for displaying on the site is it needs to be a flat figure, i.e. please do not try to display 3d round figures there are many other sites for those.  To your specific questions:

1.  For Works in Progress the Gallery Forum is a good place to show how you are doing and ask for comments or advice.

2.  For completed work you can also add a post in the Gallery Forum or you can add a personal section in the Member's Gallery section - http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?action=gallery;su=user;sa=userlist  It is really a matter of personal taste, i.e. there are no rules for where you show your work.

Everyone who is an Associate or Member can add a Personal Gallery.  Just click on the MyGallery button at the top of that page and go from there.  You will only be able to post in your own Personal Gallery in this section - do not worry about all of the other sub-categories, I - the Administrator - am the only one that can post to those areas.

If you need assistance just send me a note and I will do my best to get you going.

Also I should mention for non-Painters - collectors of Flats - we have a separate Forum and Gallery there to show their acquisitions as well.

3.  Information on the size of the figure, Editor, Engraver and medium painted are all of interest.

4.  The only restriction on size is under 6 mb which is a limit of the software.  Under 1 mb is probably best as they take a while to download otherwise but, the larger files also have the ability to zoom in for a great deal of detail.  Most file types are allowed though JPG and PNG are the most common.

If you have any troubles with the Galleries or uploading drop me a Message and I will try to assist.

Well for a start, I post all of my stand alone pieces - basically a single image - in the Gallery Forum.

I post my WIPs and SBSs in the Techniques Forum (I was asked to do this). Both forums can be used to solicit comments, critiques, etc. Very handy for the WIPs and SBSs; sometimes people catch something you're not seeing.

Can't answer your questions about the a personal Gallery folder. I don't have one, but maybe I should start one. It always useful - regardless of forum or gallery - to post the name, maker, scale/size, and paint type in your posts. You can also post where you got it. I get my pieces from The Little Tin Soldier here in the US.

There are size and number (6) limits for pics per post and these are listed in the FAQs. The pic size limit is pretty big so you won't really have any issues with it. I tend to make my images at about 1.5 - 3 times actual size. 1.5 gives the viewer a better look at what the piece actually looks like. Larger sizes start to show way more detail than necessary such as paint strokes, paint grains/blobs etc. Imagine looking at the Mona Lisa from 6 inches instead of 6 feet. It makes a difference. My flats are scanned on a flatbed scanner. I always use .jpg files with a 96 dpi resolution.

The mods, et al, can weigh in with more info. Or correct mine...

Cheers,

Glen

Hello, as newby, I have some questions on how to enter informations:
1) for new paintings, or WIP to get exchanges and comments: in the members forum, new gallery ?
2) For already painted, finished works, also to et some suggestions, comments = same section or separate?
3) For posting photographs for existing significants works in the "Gallery": (a) How to create a personal foler? by the aministrator? (b) where (many sub-groups ...) (c) When attempting to creat a new, it asks for a title, then a subgroup, with a long list as choice : whiech one to select, or none? (3) Is it useful, suggested to enter also the size, paint type, editor or engravor, date painted in the title or somewhere else? or not at all, just a short title? (if more infos, where to find for others, most of time, no infos...).
4) Is a picture size limit given? (I saw some large files, small files when reading other posts..), or maximum size, or minimum? ...in JPG (or other types accepted?)

Thank you
Michel

Yes, welcome, always room for another 'flattie'.

I do agree with Nicholas, age is only a state of mind - my wife would claim I still am at the mental age of a 16 year old.

Also feel no hesitancy about showing your work and or looking for advice.  The 'real' goal of painting is to enjoy oneself and spend some pleasant time and for some of us improve a bit over time if possible - me included.  Part of that process is showing of one's work and telling some stories along the way.

Welcome to the Forum, I look forward to seeing some of your painting soon. Age is only a number, we are all young at heart.

We will be at Ransart at the end of January, it would be good to meet up with you if can can go.

Kind regards        Nicholas

Hello to you
« Reply #1 on: November 20, 2014, 05:19:15 AM »
Hello !
I am reading your site since two years, passively.
I am 68, retired after a long life in the field of medical devices and I discovred figurine painting, instead of my planned plastic sailing ships.
After one year of learning with acrylic painting techniques, end of 2012, I joined the AMC club in Braine-l'Alleud, Belgium and discovered oil painting.  It was a beautiful move, but the difference in handling oil paints, slow drying, against acrylic, immediate drying, rendered me mad and it took one year to acquire new habits in the technique.
In June 2013, I discovered flat painting and and new flash came, so I now paint 80% of flats and much less figurines.  The discovery of 3D illusion and 'trompe l'oeil' technics, cast shadows, blending, consistent lightening are still fascinating me today. I am still poor in free hands painting, and in basing my figurines, and in conversions, but it will eventually come in the future.
I do participate to some competitions to measure my level and try to improve, but my number 1 ennemy today is ... age, as I realize I have only a  (very) few years still in front of me, during which improvements will be more and more compensated by a degradation of the eyes and the precision in holding a brush (*).
Although I was passively reading your site the past 18 months, I am happy to join this forum, to discover many new skilled painters, also the American styles, and therefore to continue learning, and so I joined yesterday the 2014-2015 painting Kulmbach project , even a bity late to calibrate myself in your group.
I will soon post some of my few last paintings, and will appreciate your recommendations and support to move my battle above (*) as far as I can in the good direction.  I have also convinced my 68 wife too to join last year too. She started end of 2011 with canevas painting first to add flats one year ago.  I'll also post some of her works.
I was sad of not joining the Folkestone exhibition this year as I spend spring and summer in Turkey.
Thank you Brian for your support and friendship !
