Title: Site availability
Post by: marko on March 12, 2014, 02:04:50 PM
Just as a note to folks there has been some periodic availability issues the site has been going through - somewhere between 30 - 60 minutes a week.  I do get a periodic uptime report and alerts so that I can proactively handle the issues.

Basically due to our popularity - good thing - we have been getting some denial of service attacks which is taking some time to sort out - bad thing.

Apologies for the inconvenience - this is acknowledgement of the issue which is being researched.

If I understand your issue you are trying to get to the site from Google Chrome and don't see a login page?

There is no Home page to the site any longer nor login page.  However, you should normally see something like this:

If I have this wrong or you are having a different experience send me a picture of the screen please.

I think what Willie is trying to say is that if you Google "British Flat Figure Society" or "Internationl Flat Figure Society" it takes you to some random page, e.g. a Journal .pdf, and not to the home page.

Of course the work around solution is to delete the contents of address of the page you on ( e.g. http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?action=post;topic=1297.0;last_msg=10313 (http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?action=post;topic=1297.0;last_msg=10313))  from the right side until you come to www.intflatfigures.org, (http://www.intflatfigures.org,) . You will then get to the home page.

I'm, thinking that perhaps our indexing or key words are not correct, or not properly linked so they lead searchers to the home page.

My two cents.

Ok, thank you for the translation - that I understand.  International Flat Figure Society and British Flat Figure Society are going to another site that is referring to us.

I can add the plumbing that should drive GOOGLE to go to us first.

If this is the case a simple bookmark to the Home Page should also resolve the issue or use intflatfigures in GOOGLE to get to us as well.

Should take about a three days to catch up once I enter the terms.

Thanks, Mark. If I recall correctly, Willie said there is some reason he cannot bookmark the home page - which, I agree, is the first choice. That's what I do; ergo, a brilliant move  ;-).

Dave,

Someone is going to have to explain what they are doing, i.e. from X browser I am going to Y with this result.  I don't see any issues and when I do a search in Google our site is brought up in the search directly.

What url are you trying to get to and how?

Sorry I can't be of more help but, I don't know what the issue is as of yet.

Maybe if you could send me a screen print of where on Google you are starting from.

To me Google means google.com where one performs a search.  I suspect you have some sort of launch page there?

If it is google.com, what is it that you are entering that is causing folks problems?

I have looked at this issue several times and unfortunately it has nothing to do with the BFFS site and everything to do with how Google handles searches internally, i.e. the site is fine at the moment as it was the last time this was reported.

What shows up in Google is dependent on a variety of factors such as the volume of traffic, key words and marketing.  I have made some changes in the past to help make sure we come up appropriately first in a search but, I can't guarantee what Google returns in all cases using a search.

For example if we are given major kudos on a high traffic site along with our URL that may trump us coming up in a search first, though Google tends to level the playing field by averaging things and looking at multiple values.  I have put in place a variety of measures to assist with this such that we are still generally first but, I can't guarantee what they will return.

If you are getting a page with old results that would indicate to me the page is being cached somewhere - again something I cannot control unfortunately.  For whatever reason that may have been a day we had a large volume of traffic or some such but, the Home Page should always show current data.

Only suggestion I can make if you can't save a bookmark to the site and have to enter via a search screen try searching on http://intflatfigures.org (http://intflatfigures.org) which is our specific URL.

Sorry I can't supply more insight on this.
