Hello,

One could think that the darkness of the picture posted was intented to hide the small uncompleted détails of the painting, so I tried to bring up some rebalancing of the lights, and the picture reveals a very beautiful work !!

Congratulations, outstanding painting very well balanced in tones & shadows !!
All shadows are given, even on the floor .....

the only detail due to sculpture, but which could be perhaps painted in "trompe-l'oeil" is the flatness of the bak leg muscles, rather flat, even with a strange shape recessed in the main thigh instead of a positive roundness .. and sharp roundness of its back keeping the structure of a flat, but this is used and emphasized by some other painters too as a style.
Title: Re: Trooping the colour
Post by: fesak_j on December 13, 2016, 12:55:19 PM
michel: thank you so much  ;)  ...... nothing to hide here, just i m deadly weak to do photos  ::) i use mobile phone and the shadow is me during the late night in the kitchen  ;D
good point. firts i have painted the trousers close to final version but it looked too flat. i did not like and i repainted it to previous published version and as i wrote, i was not satisfied again. i did all day thinkin in the work  :D  how to paint the roundness  in 2 or 3 mm ?  ;D   i think you re right that at least i could add a little dark grey on the back side of the leg  :-X  which def help to create an ilusion of 3d. :)

Very nice painting. I like that.
As your painting is dark (as my own) I would try to take pictures against a lighter background. Maybe something in the colour of sand, like a parade ground would work to give the figures a greater effect.
Christoph
Title: Re: Trooping the colour
Post by: Hannibal on March 18, 2017, 06:00:00 AM
You are right, Christoph.

Black background brings up the best colours, due to the contrast between no colour and colours.
White background is probably the worst becasue white is tt bright and kills the colours, which become too dark! the white therefore become too shiny to the eyes.

But other backgrounds lighter can be useful if associated as complementar to the dominant colour of the painting. The tone is softer, Grey is neutral, more 'universal', but others would also fit.

Here are some examples or a red painted subject.

christoph: thank you for a tip  ;)  that s correct, i use dark tones and highlights a bit more than before as i was inspired by you  ;D

michel: thank you so much, this explanation is perfect. i was thinking how it could look with different colour backrounds  :)  ...... i think that the black backround is the best to use or dark blue maybe dark grey.

Again very nice.
I´m not sure, but is this the blacksmith of the unit?
Christoph
Title: Re: Trooping the colour
Post by: BobLeighton on April 29, 2017, 09:15:59 AM

Hello Christoph
It is the Farrier of the unit and is responsible for the care of the horses, main duty in war is to lop off the hoof from dead or destroyed horses  which has the regimental number to proove that the horse has been lost and not stolen or sold by the rider.
The Pointed part of the axe at the rear is designed to despatch the horse and the blade to remove the hoof.
The Farrier carried out some of the duties of a blacksmith but I believe is not actually a blacksmith.
A look through a good book of blacksmiths. Farriers will explain better than I can.
Kindest regards
 Bob

Thanks for the exlanation Bob.
The farrier is what I mean with the word blacksmith, but it wasn`t the right translation into English.

Just one small point (I´m a piper myself so I noticed that):
You paint the drones of the pipe of the scottish piper all brown. Drones are mounted at the end of each section with ivory or metall (silver or nickel). Take a look here:

Thank you for that

Maybe could you try a light blue or light grey
Eric
Title: Re: Trooping the colour
Post by: fesak_j on November 27, 2017, 08:28:44 AM
thank you Eric  ;)  guess the white is too screaming on the black backround instead of other calmed colours, otherway i did photo by mobile and the natural shadow is me under the light....i think in some photo tent it should be provided better. i ll try different backrounds with the next figure  :)  and post the result.

I did lighten the pictures before sending the Journal to the printers, but should have lightened them a bit more. It is a bit subjective - what looks OK on screen may be too dark after conversion to CMYK and export to print quality PDF. Will try harder next time.

eric: during the weekend I ll try to make somehow photo tent as the frame is large and as I usually did photo by mobile phone this time is almost impossible, what a luck that I have some basic photo camera  ;D  so i have completed: music band, the queen and her suite, soldiers ...

brian:  ;D ;D ;D  ..... it is very hard to keep the form as Eric has constantly.

WoW ! Very impressive despite the quality of the picture
