Antiquing or ageing Flat Figures
Midge:
Thanks for all the advice guys its much appreciated, I have plenty of acrylics, but no oils so I'll go and buy a small tube of black oil paint.
Joerg:
Give it a dark or black (very liquid) oil paint,
let it dry
and go over it with steel-wool pad (for cleaning pans and working tables)
to bring out the bare metal as highlights.
Brian:
Clean the figure of flash, black oil paint dabbed on and in one direction gently clean the paint off, this give you a patina on the figure ;)

Midge:
Thanks Guys I appreciate your input!
What I would actually like to do is just bring out the detail. Would putting on a dark wash and then rubbing it off be a solution?

One very old and simple approach is to undercoat in a dark color and then use rub'n buff which is a paste that can be applied with a cloth. There is a silver, silver and bronze product all of which provide a nice aged look.
