To our members and also visitors !!
With the new issue of eight flats by Mauro Venturi, drawing of Andrea Gagelmann an engraving by Regina Sonntag, from MB Miniatures for Kulmbach this year representing eight characters of the famous battle of Agincourt in 1415 opposing the English army of Henry V against French Army led by the Constable f France, Charles Albret, I propose to start a new painting project extending till next year July 15th 2018, and addressed to BFFS Members and non-Members !!
These flats are based on 1/72 figures on the same subject and magnificently painted by MB Miniatures, and will be a première as far as the flats are concerned ….
Please refer to the announcement post of Brian for the history of this theme: http://www.intflatfigures.org/index.php?topic=3351.msg22484;topicseen#new
I suggest that each participant will receive two (2) flats of his /her choice (**) among the set of eight, free of charge, and commits to paint them and send them UNFRAMED for free and no return to BFFS in England, person to be designated, and this before July 2018, to be consolidated and exposed by BFFS at Euromilitaire 2018 and subsequent competitions. An article will also be issued in the BFFS Magazine.
During the painting period, you are also kindly invited to explain, perhaps discuss, question the paintings on this site here and on this post, and we will present the pictures of the finished paintings in the Gallery, as figures are returned to BFFS.
We need by reply your registration here, your choice of two characters (first in-first served) and your shipping address and email contact for communication, by MP. (**) Choice can be indicated on registration or on picking up the two pieces at the BFFS booth at Kulmbach during the festival !
We will post the two flats selected after Kulmbach during the month of August, unless picked up on site at the BFFS booth in the tent, if you are present!
As orders to the editor should be placed rapidly for Kulmbach, I would appreciate receiving your interest and future registration, to determine how many additional sets might be ordered for end of next week at Kulmbach.
The eight flats represent the main commanders of the French army which took part to the Agincourt battle on October 25th, 1415, ending with disaster for the French, during the Hundred Years war.

We will keep you informed of the remaining flats available here, as they are selected; first selected, first served... Three sets of the eight flats will be available = twenty four (24) figures or twelve pairs; more later if needed and asked by the end of the Kulmbach show !!
Michel

Michel,
I have ordered a set of these and would also like to join your project as well.
A favorite period of mine, these are some figures I have been working on for a while in three dimensions - still have not got the painting of fleur de lys down quite right.

Hello Marko,
Itwill be with great pleasure if you join; let me know at you convenience which two characters you propose to paint. Can I consider that you will get them by yourself direcly, or from the BFFS pool?
Michel
(I will also restroactively review the Joerg, Mike, and others messages.....)
-
Hello Michael,
I would like to take part with figures 5 and 6. I can pick them up at Kulmbach.
Thanks for you generosity in funding this project.
I hope that your recovery is going smoothly.
Regards
John

Thank you Glen and welcome. Info passed here.
Brian, can you pass to BFFS Team before they leave tomorrow, to put these flats aside as reserved .... I ignore who is going to Kulmbach ..
(just copy the tables below, so that they can complete at Kulmbach.
As far as I am concerned, I would take in the remainings, but would love having one bearer and one without flag, if possible (nt mandatory); I leave the choice to BFFS !!!

Some photos of the figures painted Cheli Fabrizio

Superb!!! He makes me hungry to start !
An excellent challenge for us all!!
I transposed the numbering of the project characters to make your choice easier!

Excellent project, may I to partecipate ? Figures preferred A5/A7 but all of them are really actractive.
Francesco
PS the figure showing heraldry ot the Boucicault is wrong ( He is Charles d'Artois), the right heraldry is D'argent à l'aigle éployée de gueules becquée et membrée d'azur" as in the painting of Fabrizio Cheli .
Thanks to all

Hello Francesco !
Yes , be welcome, and we will try to allocat you these two figures, if possible. Are you visiting Kulmbch, or shall we send you the flats? In which case, please send me an MP with your address. If in Kulmbach, please go and have your flats at the BFFS booth !!
BFFS team is at Kulmbach till Sunday, some participant will choose there their flats, and un returning back, we will see what is available, because I can't communiacte with them now.
(Unless Brian has a phone contact with them to indicate your choice !!)
For Boucicault, you are correct, but the original coat of arms f Charles d'Artois was changed as being too complex to paint at that scale, so the painting of Fabrizio is correct now !! Informaton came very recently !!!

Ah !!
My friend Alain forgot to go to BFFS booth, having received the fout-rth set from ... Western Miniatures (?!), so is back with a set of eight.
So BFFS, Brian, can you summarize with our BFFS friend at Kulmbach which flat was picked up by who, what is now back in England, and what can be allocated to the table below for shipment; Also what is left over for further candidates (including myself).
In case of shortage, I can ask Alain to ship flat from the 8x set he has now in his hands ...
If anyone wish still now to join our painting project, you are welcome in the coming weeks, there is not closing time to start, ut more to complete the task mid-2018 !!!! Just et know, choose two flats and send an MP with your shipping address ...
Is also Mauro part of the game?
Michel

So just waiting now for the guys to get back from Germany ;)

I am also giving here to BFFS the fourth set of 8 that I bought at Kumbach for myself I will take two (A1 and A5) and ask the other six to be shipped from Belgium to Brian, BFFS in England, then adjust the list with the element above.

I 've asked Alain Moerman, president of our AMC club to ship the eight flats A1-A8 minus my two (A1 and A5), so A2, A3, A4 A6, A7 and A8 of my fourth set, to Brian by courier ..
We can have a global refreshment of available flats next week, compare to requested allocations to be shipped and see what is left-over for future requests ...
Thanks Nick and Brian to work on this, and for your support .....
Michel

Go Brian and Nick =
After one week, any sign of life of the BFS team back from Kulmbach with the left-over flats ? Or do we need to send an Interpol search for them in Europe ? ::) ;D
-
I will get the figures tomorrow ;D
-
Brian, I thought Ed wasn't back for another 3 weeks?? ;) ;D ;D
-
Is that 3 weeks from Kulmbach or 3 weeks from now :)
-
Sorted!! ready to post ;) Jean Paul , have no A8 left so A3 is being sent.
What is happening with Henri, am I to send figures?
Need addresses for Jean Paul and Dufour.
Figures left A1 X 1, A2 X 2, A3 X 1 Francesco are you OK with one of these 4 figures left from 3 sets.
Mark are you taking from you own set? or you could have 2 of the 4 that are left
Another member Peter, had 2 figures in Kulmbach, was not on the list
-
Hey Brian, I will take from my own set I think - if only someone could acknowledge where it is? No one seems to know so far?
Regardless great project idea!

Michel / Hannibal

PC back on use, but I lost all emails since 18 months, so related to this project too, will need to ask again few infos in the coming day... Sorry ... (ut email still not connected, so use MP here)
Michel
-
Back to life (except for pictures still, not functioning yet).
1) Brian, can you reconfirm status now, because Nick email is confusing, whether the numbers he indicated in his gave are engraved on each flat (82, 86, 85, ...) or the "8" is a translation of the "A" (which would be a problem as they are quiet different from the initial requests expressed), and I have no flat available to see what is the I.D engraved on each flat.
2) Mike D still need to have his two flats selected ad shipped to him in N-Y (Brian)
3) The package with the fourth set contains (in principle) one piece of A2, A3, A4, A6, A7 and A8 as I asked to remove A1 and A5 for me ....
4) What is Peter situation ? and Henri ...?
5) How many flats left over before arrival of the 4th set, and who is still to be allocated , besides Mike D...
If correct, inventory should be as per Brian, and with the 4th set shipped from Belgium (*):
A1: 1+0*
A2: 2+1* but -1 to Jean_Paul
A3: 1+1* but -1 to Jean_Paul
A4: 0+1*
A5: 0+0*
A6: 0+1*
A7: 0+1*
A8: 0+1*
Total: 4+6* - 2(Jean Paul) = 8 left
Still to be allocated : Mike D (2 x), Francesco (x2) an ?? Henri (x2 ?) or already counted?
Who is Peter and which flats in his hands ...

I went to Menton Show yesterday, i saw the flats painted by Chieli Fabrizio, they are gorgeous. I will erase all drawings of stars and flowers, i do them in free hand
I bought a serie for me
-
I will do so too ! an excellent exercise !
But with Fabrizio, you refer to the top of the top !!
-
Must visit Alain next week, to recuperate my two flats, and so start planning the preparation for painting....
I strated looking at the coloursof the coat of arms, and will probably use brighter colours than Francesco, to avoid a copy paste without any inspiration!!!
But I will keep the light coming from the front left side as standard source to shadow the flats!!
Any new candidate to join ??
-
Yes !!!
I found too my two knights, BEAUTIFUL ....
Perhaps I would post the WIP in a separate post to avoid a big mix-up, because I am slow and busy on others, but on this public menu, like "BFFS Agincourt Project 2018 - WIP Michel (or Hannibal?)" for the two characters.
I have a question to Middle Age specialists = what are the colours worn by the Standard bearers knights.
Here is one A3, standard bearer of the Constable of France painted with light green background and crosses blue, I believe, He has no specific name; is colour lefte to appreciation, or to searches in the History to find out who was bearing the flag? Engraving was done with a reason perhaps ?

Basically standard bearers worn colours recalling those of the lord, obiouvsly non wearing same heraldry. In this case however i think you are speaking of the stadard of Constable of France intended as first officer of the crown , white with yellow fleur de lys, and not of Charles d'Albert in himself which has his own banner bearer. In this case I think you can choise any coluors you enjoy, in a vignette Mario Venturi represent the bearer wearing a dark red tunic with gold/yellow figures.
Hope this is usefull.

Thank you Francesco, for your two replies !
-
How are you all getting on with the project?? still got 6 figures left if you want to join the fun.
Will be 3 joining and you get 2 figures sent at random ;)
-
I will start working on end next week; because we have Veldhoven, and I just acquire a new camera Nikkon, which I have to learn using correctly if possible before next Friday !
-
I'm cleaning up and priming mine. Tried to do it during ReaperCon, but I was pulled in too many different directions and finally started working on the Dark Elf Ranger.
Just to be clear:
These are two sided figures; I am painting one or both sides?
I am painting these according to the previously posted refs; red surcoat with yellow diamonds on one and a brown gambeson on the dude holding the banner (and the banner itself is also painted as shown in the refs).
Correct?
Glen
While I wait I will enjoy a soft musical interlude of Blackmore's Night... 8)
-
Ok, no feedback. I'm going with the existing refs and one sided. Charge!
-
Sorry Glen, read now only.
1) I plan to paint one side only, light from the front left side as these flats will be exposed in a frame, not in a diorama
2) Colours are set by the coat of arms for the most; your figure is Jacques III de Heilly, killed at Agincourt, his coat of arms is "De gueules, à une bande fusellée d'or", so colours are Red and Yellow (I can't attach figure from my laptop now).
Jacques III of Créquy, sun of Jacques II de Créquy, lord of Heilly, served the duke of Burgundy Jean Sans Peur of which he was one of the main captains. In 1408, he marched against the Liege to restore their bishop on the episcopal seat. In 1413, he was made Lieutenant General of Guyenne. As a prisoner in Bordeaux, he fled. He took part in the battle of Agincourt in 1415 and was killed by the English, on the grounds that, against his word, he had escaped from his prison.
The nuance of red and yellow you wish to give is up to you, either bright, saturated or not; the colours we hav today from historical flags an paintings have been somewhat been faded by exposure to the aging and sunlight.
-
Thanks. Already well on them. I've noticed the standard bearer figure has a brown gambeson, but the references show the gambeson as being a light tan color with the standard emblem over the figure's heart. I'm going to try an paint this, but the Fleur de Lis' will probably be little more than a dot pattern applied with a toothpick. I'm painting my light direction from the upper right front because that's the direction they're facing. When all else fails ...light the face.
Pressing on!
-
I saw the painted set at Veldhoven with the vendor and will post them on the laptop of my wife later tonight in this answer ..... Keep in mind this is the interpretation of the painter, not a mandatoy box art!

This is the primary reference I'm using. It was posted very early in this thread. Note the lighter color of the gambeson and the chest insignia. Some of the details on the artwork were not duplicated on the figures, but I'll work around it.
-
The standard bearer I believe has not necessirily to bear the coat of arms like the owner of the coat of arms; this small drawing looks perhaps more like the modern sign of a golf club on his chest, than the historical representation of past unfiform of the bearer as it was on that date ...
-
OK, so the presence of the Coat of Arms on the standard bearers chest is a big 'maybe'...? I can see it being present to indicate a person's affiliation with the boss, but then again, maybe not. I/we don't know the the true source material of the original illustration, so I'm thinking there may be some 'artistic licence' here. I think I will add it because it's adds some color to the figure's body.

Glen try looking at the Dictionary of Heraldry Feudal Coasts of Arms and Pedigress By Joseph Foster get the one with the blue cover it has the color in it. Also Le Costume L'Armure ET Les Armes Au Temps DE LA Chevalerie BY Liliane et Fred Funcken :o Willie

Fantastic painting ! Sharp, lightnenend, detailed .... WAAOOUWWW.
Good to get at Lyon, so I can pass them to Brian at Montrouge on following month.

thank you to all
please to see you in Montrouge Eric

Bravo Daniel

Hello to all,
I have started working on my two figures to bring them in Montrouge end of the month. I have ungraved the heraldic drawings on the character of Jean I, Duc de Bourbon, but now lost track of the positions at the time of painting ....
My question and concern is what to be painted ..... on the two arms !!
When referring to the outstanding leaflet of Jean-Claude Colrat "Aide-mémoire héraldique", issued by the Briquet in French language, I read again the principle of "Contournement", meaning the heraldic on the shield is painted so on the chest and on the back if the coat of the knight, on the left side of the horse caparison, on the left arm of the knight, and of the banner see from the left side, but is INVERTED on the the right side of the caparison, arm of the knight and banner !!
Actually there seems to be is an engraving error on the right arm of Jean I. The heraldy consists of three "fleur-de-lys" with a red diagonal "bande" across them on blue background. The "barre" is a diagonal from upper left to bottom right, as opposed to the "barre", the opposite, It is represented on the chest of the Duke on the flat, not to hold the sword, but as a heraldic "barre". On the right arm, the engraver shows the bottom end of the barre, but not inverted as it should be ?, when it is correcty shown on the left arm.
I will try to adjust, I am mentioning this for the other painters who still will paint Jean I of Bourbon!
I have one question also, as I will paint the Standard bearer of the Constable of France (with the three large 'fleurs-de-lys' = what are the small crosses on the breast of the knight? To determine the colour also. They are engraved as small "+" but could also be an "Hermine" (white background), spread with small black ("sable") mouchetures of hermine = small cross with hermine tail ..... Which means black colour ( I alrdeady painted them in dark blue) ...
Like the Italian painter, I will paint the half right chest side with white, and the other side with emerauld green, but these small crosses are still Under question .., for their shape and colour. I feel now should be in black colour...
Any opinion?
(sorry my laptop is under repair, I can't add pictures and work from my wife's computer, perhaps fixed next week)
-
Job done. Do you have any suggestion about it?
Cheers
Francesco

I painted my two figures in March and presented them at Montrouge (Paris) end of the month.

Thank you therefore to proceed to completion and shipping latest in July !
Several arrived, beautiful. I will follow-up from my Turkish home on this site ....

J'aime beaucoup le travail sur l'armure
Eric

I apologize if this is a repeat.
On the web site Goriniart.com a web site of paper soldiers.
the sheets on Azincourt offer colored drawings of the same group of French commanders as Mario Venturi used for his grouping.
Which came first? Who cares they are all great as is the work by this group on the MB flats
Any word on the English commanders shown by Gorini?
Hope to see a lot of American and other flats collectors at the MFCA on May 4 and 5 - see mfcashow.com
Cheers
ART

Interesting, I have never seen these. Quite a few of them match figures Mario Venturi and team have done in the past. There is also one that matches an old Pegaso set of probably 10 years ago.
Nicely done and great painting guides.

I am discovering too, first time, and very surprised !!!
I have sent an email to them to order one set of Agincourt !
As far as the English Team, I have at Montrouge suggested to Brian, and later to Nick B by email, to BFFS to develop the English contrepartie of the battle as possible projet of new flats after Arthur serie, similar to MB Miniatures or via them, to complete the French staff, within two years time and continue the project with the winners of the battle...
So far no reaction, but I suppose it must go slowly to their Staff meetings bfore generating some kind of feedback ...
I bought myself the whole set of French Agincourt with the intend to paint it one day as I had a lot of pleasure to do my two pièces ...
Very surprising indeed and curious as to who was the first native Creator of the drawings ....
M.
-
Looking at the other subjects (Indians, Waterloo, Napoleon soldiers, ... I saw these flats on sales on the market since several years, and I wold not be surprised that this guy has painted his subject after the creation of several flats issued previousely, Maio Venturi.
Nice work, very colorfull and will be used as excellent guidance fo painting the flats. We have just to add some three dimensional and volume effect lke rondes-bosses to give our touch !!
-
Hello Gents, here is the reply received today from Vittorio Gironi; I will order the 10 pages, to come in Belgium for August:
"Hello Michel,
A large part of my drawings about Azincourt, as well as the items by MB Zinnfiguren, are inspired to the works of my good friend Mario Venturi. "World Master” for Italy his model soldiers are in many european and american collections. About Azincourt he wrote two books and together with Peter Greenville he wrote the book “Create Miniature Knights”, in this book there are two Mario’s masterpiece: the diorama of Crécy (gold at Folkestone 1997) and the diorama of Poitiers (gold at Boston 2005). Here below you can find the link to Mario Venturi website: http://www.parvimilites.it/03_04centoanni.html
Here enclosed I’m sending you a picture of the work he realized for me two years ago.
Best regards
Vittorio"
Therefore I believe BFFS should pursue the production of Agincourt flats with the English team, along with MB zinnfiguren ..... and perhaps some other ones ...
This will also complete the Knights developed by Western Miniatures and a bit lost . I am working on the serie for 2019-2020 (I needed to become a better painter first ...).
-
New touch
-
Superb !!!!
-
They talk before the battle
-
Where are the english knight?
-
Just wait a while. They will come.
-
for history , Mr Colrat(middle age specialist) said to me the connetable Richmond WAS NOT CONNETABLE AT THE BATTLE AGINCOURT AND HE HAS GOT THIS WHITE FLAG IN 1425 AT THE BATTLE OF PATAY
-
Finished
-
Super !!!!!!
But 1) the standard bearer of he flag is not Connetable Richmont, whose coat of arms is different. I am not sure of the coat of arm of this knight, perhaps Tugdual de Kermoysan, or a knight dead during Azincourt, called 'Andelot', but rather unknown ... more searches t be done to identify the character. he coat of arm of the character is difficult to identify, I'll try to contact Jean-Claude C.
2) The name of Agincourt is confusing with the small French village of Agincourt located in the East of France near Nancy in Lorraine, Meurthe et Moselle at some 450 km of AZINCOURT in the Pas-de-Calais where the battle took place. I'll have to adjust my titles everywhere...
-
Interesting enough Michel, before Henry v, the kings of England held large areas of northern France and the town was indeed under the English name of Agincourt. The battle was held in the field of Azincourt, the French name.
The battle was caused because the French had sent tennis balls and Blankets? to Henry (a pretty big insult at the time) so Henry descended on France.
After the Battle, in order for Henry to take full revenge as such, he agreed with the French Commanders that the Battle was to be called The Battle of Azincourt, so the French would always know they had been defeated there!
There are 3 separate accounts of this held within archives here.
Interesting stuff History. Will make a great write up at the time
-
Thanks Nick, very interesting story, and to be told indeed !!!
-
johnr, your two figures arrived safely to destination in Belgium !! Thank you ....
-
Hello to all,
I am returning to Belgum early August to assemble all painted flat in a frame, and perhaps bring it to England to a member of the BFFS in order to expose the work at Folkestone in September and at Eindhoven in October.
But I need the remaining painting by August 1st latest, as I have several travels during the monh, and I return to Turkey end of August!!!
Please send your completed work ASAP (Greg, Marko, Henry S, Glen, Mike Goldberg).
If not done yet, I'll send an MP with the shipping adress during my abesence (to Alain Moerman),
because my next return will be .... a few days before Sèvres, end of November......
We have the other paintings at home or arrived by Alain .....
Thank you568
-
Michel, did my figures arrive? I sent them in July and I haven't heard back on anything...
Glen
-
Sorry Glen, trappe by time and my return to Turkey.
I saw your pack from Alain before leaving an copied even your adress.
So package receive, thank you!!!
No time to consolidate all flats & order the ID labels for posting, I am back in Turkey now tll end of November ..
I can't attend Folkestone, nor Eindhoven anyway. I also received the flts from Gregory, so list is almos completed (question mark on Henri Schmidt in my files ...) and work to finalize in December....
Sorry, my life is a bit disturbed at this time, or on my age I am starting Alzheimer ?
Just arrived at 04:00 am last night in Turkey, unpacking, so more will be given in the coming days....
-
Some news from this project ... ?
-
If you are interested for a new painting project the English Commanders at Agincourt are almost ready.
-
Figures have been returned but not all, so if your still not finished you've got till the end of June to get them to Michel or myself for display at Kulmbach.
And when the new figures are ready post a photo, sounds good and could be the next project
