Title: Scholtz - Bathing in the 1500s by Mohr
Post by: marko on May 30, 2015, 04:56:45 PM
Two typically humorous and beautiful sets engraved by Mohr, purchased from Scholtz - Berliner Zinnfiguren.

Bathing at home 1500 and Public Bathing 1450

Douchkine has a charming version of these many folks will remember.

Remindes me of Olaus Magnus' History of the Nordic peoples (org. printed in 1555) and one of the woodcuttings in it. The illustrated version of Troels-Lund's Dagligt liv i Norden i det sekstende Aarhundrede have many more deciptions of similar scenes. Those woodcuttings in the Danish book are though of German origin, on the net I have found Deutsches Badewesen in vergangen Tagen https://archive.org/stream/deutschesbadewes00mart_0#page/89/mode/thumb (https://archive.org/stream/deutschesbadewes00mart_0#page/89/mode/thumb)
You can clearly see where Mohr got his inspiration.
As a Finn I immediately recognize the public bath as a sauna. But I also notice the cupper, as I myself goes to a female cupper quarterly, in fact the very same as Anthony Bourdain went to during his visit in Helsinki

Hallo Casper,

there are pictures of a nice medival bathing diorama on the side of Ulrich Lehnart, who edits
some similar figures.

Best regards

Michael

Charming set indeed!
Would not be perfectly engaged with my Napoleon's retreat project I myself would buy one and paint the set, too.
Caspar's contribution (link: Deutsches Badewesens ...) is also interesting culturhistoric addition and is worthwhile to see!
Thank you.
Best regards-
sandor

Bought the set in winter/spring this year. I am especially pleased with the skinn tone of the older man at the left.
