Title: Proposal of Project for 2019 Kulmbach and Eindhoven
Post by: Hannibal on September 24, 2018, 05:28:11 AM
Hello Guys ......

What do you think of a painting challenge for next year with this (Benedikt Widmann) (85mm) ?

Greg is busy, I will start in January ... who wishes to join?

This is a challenge that some will find to difficult to paint!!
But have a go and see how you do, we are not all to the standard of Nick, Trevor and Eric and this is not what is being asked but just to be part of the project
You'll pay for your figure, paint it the best you can and show it on the forum, if at one of the shows mentioned show your figure there and maybe walk away with the prize.
There's no difficulty in getting the figures ether from Benedikt or myself, price depends on how many take part.

Its a beautiful figure, as are all of Benedikts but, IMHO, its a bit too much for the average painter and not of a subject many people care to paint. Perhaps the project could be a choice of 3 figures of Benedikts, chosen by the Society.

Hey, why not ??
One subject can be historical, another fantastc and a third a bust, or an animal.
The Society can meet (phsically or electronically) and have a vote, suggesting three figures ....

ending up with an article in the Journal during the second half of 2019 ....

I done have it in my hands, but I thing it is total size of the dragon ; the fighter himself is not higher that 54mm

Post by: kevind on September 25, 2018, 08:24:13 AM
I would think any figure above the scale of 54mm would be acceptable as one of the three selected by the members.

We 're already six participants in France and Belgium for the Dragon fighter ! we will coordinate there on a French forum in parallel.
We follow Greg ... who is leading the painting since September 15th, and will finish before us ...

But this can be an international party among fanatics of flats painters .... throughout 2019

Does that mean it will be only the Dragon Fighter.

In France and Belgium, yes, via a local French Forum, but members of BFFS expressed also the wish to have a choice among 3 flats.
I let BFFS Committee to select two more as proposal, before registering and proceeding to supply directly and grouped (if to the USA) or via Tin Toy Soldiers ...  I am not familiar with the taste of painters oversea, and I will paint a Dragon Fighter myself (among other paintings ...).

By the way, we are now 10 today here ... and Benedikt cannot cast before ed of next week ... (but we have time too..).

I have initiated the same project (dragon fighter) on a German Forum also today, perhap to group all of them at the World Expo in 2020 ? or Kulmbach, regionally too ...

I will be painting the Dragon figure so add me to the list, the rest I just don't understand? Just don't what to be part of anything that could be fun and a good way of getting new friends!

Well OK, sorry for kevind ...

I just registered the 14th in Europe today (12 in France and 2 in Germany) and thank you Brian for your participation .. ! and I will support you but from January onwards.. (can't get my hand n it before December)

And in England ? with the many legends existing around? nor inspiration of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland?  (I have not seen him during my fantastic journey a couple of years ago....)

(of course we already have Eric and Daniel, and myself).  I do also on a previous proposal, that members of BFFS expressed their wish to have once a non historical subject to paint .... reason of my enthousiam here ...

You have however a dragon in England, with the WYVERNE (draconis albionensis) and the WORM (draconis menatoda), remeber le Lambton worm, and in the USA, the PIASA (one Draconis avis), in Alva, Illinois ...

Thank you Joerg, very happy to receive your interest.

I am adding your need to the other one for Benedikt to provide suffisant castings.

Let me just know whether you will obtain it from Benedikt directly by yourself, being in Germany, I understand, or get it during one of the coming shows to avoid shipping costs (being in Turkey, I will get mine two at Sèvres early December).  I don't think Benedilt is attending the Veldhoven show in October (he is not listed in the vendors).

I will open also a theme soon called Dragon Fighter Project 2018-2019 for the participants, so Greg , Eric and perhaps Daniel can also place a summary of their work too aswell as myself, with you and Brian.

Free to you anyway to register in any contests as the main purpose is to share painting, quetions, and interprétations of this flat with today 17 painter.  I will also load the final paintings of the European particpants in our gallery,  Mark can open a gallery in due time (not urgent).

I will encourage also EU participants to come and look at our Forum, altough language can be an obstacle fr several of them, to increase inter-continent dialogue in flat painting.

Mark, Nick, what is the best folder to open this post, from now on?  (public or member, wnd where ...)....

Michel,
I will obtain the figure directly from Benedict.

By the way -it would be useful to get some information, how to contact Benedict.  His website is down, and what I can see at the linked Facebook-site is not really trustworthy  >:(

I'm going to pass as well. I noted the dragon seems to have been inspired by this illustration, but the samurai has been greatly simplified and turned to face the dragon. Looking at depictions of Asian dragons, I've also noted that they tend to be wingless and colorful. Have fun with it.
Title: Re: Proposal of Project for 2019 Kulmbach and Eindhoven
Post by: Hannibal on October 02, 2018, 11:24:03 AM
This is a Japanese dragon, with three fingers, and a samurai warrior (fantastic) upfront.  If I am right, they don't have wings in Japan, more looking as a snake.  Largest wings are found in European mythology (see Harry Potter, or Games of Thrones).

Thanks for your information Glen and feel sad old mythologies do not inspire our overseas colleagues as much as here in the old continent... perhaps because we identify more ourselves to our older traditions and myths here and they are more part of our heritage;

When reading the descriptions of dragons, however it is surprising that many countries have described dragons in their mythlogies since over more than 2000 years, even at times they did not know each other, which raises the question : are we sure they have really never existed ??  (I discover for example Hebrews, Hindous, Azteks ...) .... unless Adam met they at the origin .....

We are now 21 , one more in France ....

Congratulations, Greg !!

But you are challenging now very severily the other 30 participants !!!!  (Yes, we are now 31 participants registered for this project).  It will be very hard to be original and to demonstrate te same level .....

We should bring and consolidate for the event day, our works next year at each (European) exposition and show to see the diversification among us !

We shall try to designate a meeting table at each contest ..

Houston, we have a problem !

The German Post has remarkably enhanced its post fees,
what led to the point, that no abroad letter is allowed to contain any thing,
except from a sheet of paper or an usb-stick.

Therefore the cheapest way to bring a single figure from Germany to Belgium
is a parcel for another 9,19 EUR.

It would be very welcomed, if anyone could give me an German address, where the German contributions could be collected,
to reduce the overall shipping fees for the partipitants.

Otherwise a (not really comfortable) way could be, to build the frame for the project and finally complete it in Kulmbach on the spot.
