Title: Tercio Idaquez 1634
Post by: Christoph on April 21, 2020, 06:52:24 AM
Hello,
I started to paint a bigger unit for the thirty years war.
It is the spanish tercio Idaquez which played a major roll in the battle of Nördlingen 1634. In the end there will be hopefully around 600 figures.

Here are some of the first painted figures. For those of you who are intersted in the editors I write the names below the pictures.

Bravo Christoph, very nice figures with the usual highlevel and characterisic paintwork!
I could hardly find the editors on the very bottom: Lilliehöök-Lilliehöök-Dangelmaier
The 600 figures will keep you amused for a while - I think! ;)
Looking forward to see the next bunch!
Stay health!

One of the values of 30 mm figures - large settings - but, 600 figures!  That is delightfully ambitious however, surprisingly achievable given your output of nicely painted figures!

Very cool idea and have fun!

Thank you,
No worry, I´m don´t think I will paint 600 Figures of that in one run. I have now finish around 70 for the first and painting some other figures now.

@ Sandor: Some years ago Johan Lilliehöök bought the major part of Mr. Sivheds moulds including some very nice thirty year war figures. He offers a great service.

He edited some 17th century figures as well, including the "The march across the Belt", I have painted last year:

Hello,
I went on with painting some pictures for this project.
First picture shows some pikemen, recently edited by Thomas Beier. These figures wearing less armour and ragged clothing then the usual figures you can get elsewhere. So they are a nice addition.
The next picture shows these figures mixed with some other pikemen edited by Mr. Bock.

Wonderful, absolutely wonderful, Christoph!!!!!

I didn't know Thomas Beier offers this group of pikemen.

But I'm little bit crazy about the size of the pikes of his figures

Historically in the engraving of this type of figures, we find pikemen with 3 m pikes (created bei v. Droster, Müller/Wünsch, Kiel) and men with 5 m pikes (Wagner, Max Fritz, Bock, Tobinnius, Sivhed).
Here we have a new length;-(

Yes, the length of the pikes is a bit of a problem. The original length is from 4,65m up to 5,6m depending on the nation to who they belong. For example it is said that the swedish used longer pikes because of their experience figthing polish winged hussars in the 1620. The imperialists used pikes from 4,65m (15 feet) to 5m (16 feet).
So there was no standard length at all.

A pike of 5m would be 88mm long for a 30mm figure. The pikes of Mr. Beier are around 80mm.
So they would fit a pike of 4,65m.
But there are some acount saying that the soldiers shorten their pike themself to make them easier to handle. Of course without premission of their officers.

So for my opinion pikes in differnt length are okay when lenth stays in a certain frame.

You are right that some older editor´s pikes are very short. Ochel and Wünsch for example. Generally I prefer the longest pikes like Bock Sivhed, Fritz, Wagner... which are up to 100mm. But these new figures don´t look to bad with them and I´m very sure that not all pike in the thirty years war had the same length.

The usual nice work!
I like the colors, too!
They are somehow a bit faded and very realistic!

Hello,
here some more.
I painted the first colour for that unit. There are no sources how the colours of this tercio looked. So I decided to paint very simple. Just a plain field with a different diagolal cross on it. This can often seen on contemporary paintings of the time.

Both figures edited by Mr. Dangelmaier.

Nice paintwork, Christoph!
I particularly like the way you render the cross in the in the folds of the banner!
Well done!

Bravo!!
Is the standard a special Spanish flag?
Very nice the play of the light/shadow and the wrinkling on the standard - it is not easy to render!
Well done!
