Title: Where can I find first half 18th cent figures?
Post by: PauloLib on January 01, 2013, 03:09:03 PM
Hi,

I'm looking for figures from the first half of the 18th century.
Does anyone knows where I can find them?

Thanks.

Cheers.

You can try here as well:

http://www.zinnfigur.com (http://www.zinnfigur.com) - Berliner Zinfiguren.  They have figures from a variety of editors.

I  believe GO International also had quite a selection.  They are now closed but some research with them could lead you to the current owners of the slates.

Neckel has some wonderful figures of this period as well.

And finally if you like French Army Segom has a few from this period, though most of their Ancien Regime are late 18th century.    All of these have Links in the 'Links' menu above.

Guys,

thank you for the help.

I saw does from SEGOM but they sell the set at good price but since I don't need more than one copy of each figure I asked for individual prices and I find them a bit high.

I would like to start with the French but I wouldn't say no to Britain and Prussia since they're next in list.

Roger,

I'll try to take a picture of the flats from Jean Barrierre and post it here.

Thanks.

Roger,

after some study of the funcken books I narrowed my starting point to figures from Maison du Roi for the 1720's period but I as said before if other for the same period appears they're most welcomed.

Thanks.

Cheers.

Hi, Paulo.

Those are good sites recommended by Wolfgang. But what I see in the catalogs, mostly all Seven Years War.

For 1700-1720, good suggestions have already been made. I certainly recommend Alexander Wilken as well.  Other ideas:

Siegbert Wagner had many figures for the War of the Spanish Succession.  But lack of German will be an impediment for you, he doesn't maintain an internet presence.  I'm not sure to what extent he is still active. There are a few large sets of his on the Berliner Zinnfiguren Flea Market, although painted and a little pricey. They have some Golberg sets as well.

Speaking of Golberg, they used to stock Boverat-Bretegnier, beautiful French infantry.  I'm not sure where you can find these now.

Lastly, do not rule out Heinrichsen. Old designs, yes. But many are well up to today's standards. Dr. Grobe is a pleasure to deal with, speaks fluent English, takes Paypal, very efficient.   Don't completely go by the List, if it shows out of stock, ask for what you want and sometimes she still has it.

A couple examples, The Battle of Hochstadt (Blenheim) set is quite charming.

If you're looking to paint formations of soldiers,  the "1/8 Package" cavalry sets from the 1920's are very nice as well, still readily available I believe. Some in standard profile, others in 3/4 profile.  I have two of these, imagine them with your own paint because the castings are excellent.

Hope that helps a little.

@Paulo,
try this
http://www.zinnfiguren-kw.de/preuinhaltbis1740.html

or this
http://www.fechner-zinnfiguren.de/shop/katalog.php?PHPSESSID=75fc83310b3509fa45aab4b0987645f3

Anyway - the best sources are Wilken (he is owner of the Golberg and Sauter moulds for that era),
Kieler (Ochel) and Siegbert Wagner.
Not to forget Neckel with the Army of the Blue King.

Regards
Joerg

Eric, did you intend to attach an image of Boverat-Bretegnier ?  I'd like to see it, especially if you did the painting.

Sorry but I do not have a catalogue and never paint any figure from these sets
I remember the design was good (Rousselot), but the engraving (mainly Pepin) not always
I will ask Christian Terana if he could make a copy for me so that I can post it in the forum

Thanks, Eric.  I was able to locate the old Golberg catalog sheets.  There were a number of things, cavalry as well as infantry.  Good looking designs by Rousselot if rather static in most cases.  Here's an example:

Goldberg had an agreement with Terana to sell his figures

Thanks Wolfgang.

Do you know if I'll be able to remove the paint?

I think so.
Dishwasher Tabs for cleaning of old paint empfelen I can.
Figures in a glass of water to taps and add. And soak a few sins.
then clean with a tooth brush from old paint.

Depends upon the figures, Paulo.  In my experience, the paint cleans off the old Heinrichsen figures readily enough.  But I doubt that dish soap will get it done under all circumstances.

I use Jasco gel paint stripper, no idea what the equivalent in Portuguese hardware stores might be.  Stay away from the very aggressive stuff though.  I thought to do that for time savings once and ruined an antique slush cast battleship.

In the US there is an oven cleaner called Easy Off which also works pretty well on metal, resin flats as well as plastic models.  It is pretty easy to use and does a nice job of paint removal.  I am guessing there is an equivalent there as well.

I usually find Acetone does the trick.

Good suggestion, Ed.  Acetone makes a lot of sense, I'll try it next time.

The problem is that my local chemist can only supply small quantities, as it seems that ordering large quantities puts me under suspicion of terrorist activities.

At work, we consume 4 liter bottles of acetone weekly for parts cleaning.  But now that you mention it, there seem to be not so many places in the US where you can buy it for other than industrial use.  Browsing chemical distributor's websites, looks like it would be expensive to buy a container for personal use even if they'd sell it to you with no questions asked.

Nail polish remover might be a reasonable alternative.
